My 2015 TRD sport has 22700km on it so roughly 13500 miles and it's lightly driven. the frame is starting to develop rust at the welds and it's starting to actually bubble under the coating of the frame. The truck is going into the shop this Thursday for a service and I will be having them look at. I know there is a frame recall for second gens but it's no where near that point yet. I am not in a heavy salt area and the truck has not been off road. I'm on the west coast of B.C. and I do not live near the ocean. I can not find anything on this new of a truck and I am the original owner.
Does anybody have any info on 2015 frames and their issues
    Thanks Nick

I have a 1999 which is also known for rust issues. I like to coat the frame in hdmp (an amsoil product) and spray the inside of the frame with fluid film and it looks almost brand new after more winters than yours has seen. However you probably get alot more salt than me.

Thanks for the input but I already know about all the frame protection and the fluid film trick. but the truck is only 1.5 years old and this seems like it's a toyota problem not a Nick problem. Im looking for people that have trucks after the recall date 12-15 so the end of the second gens and if they or anybody has any info regarding the last year's of the second gens. It just seems really odd to me that my truck with this low of km is already developing rust.

I know it's still minor but that's not the point. Can I take a wire wheel to yes I can. Can I apply a anti rust inhibitor yes I can. Should I have to NO

I also have rust starting around my pumpkin and where my drive shaft attaches and at my t-case

I don't understand how Toyota has not been able to resolve this in 2 generations of trucks, who is to say that the replacement frames are any better?

I saw my welds starting to rust in the first week. The frame is multi piece sandwiched together, going to hold moisture and rust. Stop looking to place blame it is what it is be proactive or get rid of it before it's to bad. Fluid film works great.

I feel ya. I would be calling corporate to document the issue! I just changed out my fathers shocks on his 98 Ranger... His undercarriages, despite a small amount of surface rust, looks really good for being 19 years old. Best of luck.

Lil lift, bumpers, SC, UCON, headers, etc.
I've seen other brand trucks with frame rust similar. That generic coating that all manufacturers use looks fine on the showroom but not long after. Most trucks just get some surface rust though and dont eat thru like the gen 1's lol.
I'd watch it but I dont think its a concern.

the first couple pics dont look bad, frame looks scuffed, the bubbling however thats concerning for its age, seeing how mine is also a 15. I agree its not something i should have to deal with, first vehicle i ever had to worry about. But too late, and i go around with fluid film every once in a while, seems to work

In one of those pics it looks like there's deep scratches that may have scraped off the protective coating.

While I agree Toyota could have likely applied a higher quality protective coating to the frames, I would consider what you observe to be a wake-up call--alerting you of the need to better maintain the machine. FWIW Tacoma frames not exposed to road salt do not have these issues.

Here are photos of the underside of my son's 2013 DCLB TRD-OR which has spent most of it's life on the beach--one could argue that the issue is really not Toyota's but the rather the municipalities that inundate the roads with corrosives:

agree to a point, but Ive lived in new england my whole life and never had a new car or truck frame rust coming off the lot. My xterra went through 5 new england winters without a spec of rust that wasnt self inflicted.

Yeah my 2000 Camry frame looked better at 15 years than my 2015 Tacoma looks at 2 years

I lived in New England, Cape Cod mostly, for 45 years; been here for 26, and agree that with the Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia frames Toyota seems to have harkened back to the 60s and early 70s when cars rusted out in 2 to 3 years. I had a '69 Charger 440 purchased new on which the rockers panels rusted out in two years; to the extent that if you jacked it up with the bumper jack the doors would not open...
