Simply a 3rd Gen. Report on a rig here that has had a lot of crap come down on the owners, i.e., Coma lag (yep had it), leaking and dry diffs (no), a Toyo flash on the AT (yep, had it and now only have a periodic issue of Coma lag when facing a meth head speeding at me on a rural road while trying to make a left. Oh yea, HD FM issues, hoods that haven't been glued together properly, etc., etc., etc. But I'm hear to report on my current 2017 SR5 at 7722 miles. In summary, I've got the quirps of this rig hopefully figured out. Built in December of 2016 by my Longhorn friends, I believe delivered me a 2017 that hopefully will run as long and trouble free as by Gen 1, 2002 (15 years and 247,000 miles). If not, I will personally stop drinking Lonestar Beer and become a Vegan! Ain't going to be a pretty sight Toyota (if your listening). But I have run the rig to California from Washington State on an extended surf trip which I do twice a year and am heading to Alaska. Pretty confident it will get me up there unless an irate moose has an issue with the current Yota Recalls and decides to take his angst out on my grill of front quarter panels. No prob. I love moose meat! And the bright side of the insurance issue is that there's no deductible. If totaled, I'll buy a 2018. By then the bugs should be worked out!

BTW, my 2017 is going braless. Getting 20-23 from City to Hwy, but! being an old fart I rarely top 65 mph in the rig. Oh yea, towed my boat with it today on S4. Towed well but I got skunked fishing!

In summary (I think I mentioned this before but being chronologically challenged) I'd vote to wait off on the 2017 but would buy a 2018 or go Yuppie on us here on the Forum and by a 2.5L Scoobie Doo Outback. All ya have to worry 'bout there is a head gasket issue at 90-120,000 miles.

    Safe Travels Folks!

P.S. Hey Smitty! I feel your pain. I owned a 1997 4x4 4L Ford Ranger AC. What a POS! Nonstop in the shop! Then I decided to pay a few $$$ and got smart, bought a new 2002 Tacoma. Never looked at another truck brand again!

Yeah I had a 2003 Tacoma and a 2003 Ford ranger with 4.0L. Both trucks were equally bullet proof with the Toyota being slightly more refined. No quality issues in either truck for many years and many miles. Wish I could say the same for my Turd gen though not sure the 2018 will be much different from a 2016 or 2017. If we have learned anything it's that Toyota is reluctant if not resistant to change and slow to refine (or at least resolve.)

What's the reason you own a truck that you clearly don't like? Why not just get something else and move on?

Waiting to see perhaps what 2019 Ford ranger brings. My last Ford ranger was problem free 160k miles. Well for that matter my GMC Sierra was too...but id like something a bit smaller maybe in the market for a fullsize eventually. Want to get 4 or 5 years off of this one first. We have a 4runner too and it's been great so don't need another one of those.
