    Not Enough.

If it's that empty on Memorial Day weekend, this looks like a place I need to know more about.

Have to love holiday beach prices. I am still up in the air if I want to deal with the traffic for our Sunday beach day

Everything south of Oregon Inlet is off limits to non resident personnel at the moment, this could last upwards of 3 weeks.. assuming you're asking about the cut power lines.

Would a stock Tacoma do ok in Corolla?

Just started going to OBX last year. I have a lifted Jeep but it is geared too low (and to unreliable) to make the trip all the way there.

I have no experience driving in sand, but plently of dirt / mud / rocks driving.

I have a trd sport with stock tires. Maybe just better tires?

Any advise for first time beach driver would be appreciated.

Yes, your 4x4 Taco will do fine in 4H even. Mine is an OR, and completely stock and I have no issues when I air down.

    Speaking of:
ProTip: AIR DOWN YOUR TIRES! get it down to 15-20psi some go lower. Its nice to have a fast air pump to air back up, but most gas stations in the area have air.

You also at least need a shovel and a jack of some sort with a base to stick it on. For the just in case.

    Will do.

    I have an e-tool

I will get something like a Hi-Lift Jack and a steel plate to spread out the load.

Excited to drive on the beach, but don't want to be that guy stuck like a fool.

"Power outage hits Outer Banks, may keep tourists out for two weeks" link

"construction crews working on the Bonner Bridge had accidentally driven a steel casing into an underground power cable, cutting it completely"

Maybe someone local could fill in more information.

This is what is required for OVR permit (https://www.recreation.gov/wildernessAreaDetails.do?page=detail&contractCode=NRSO&parkId=70853): Required equipment within the vehicle includes: low-pressure tire gauge, shovel, jack and jack support board.

We typically carry an 18" x 18" piece of 3/4" plywood.

Just received this email from Dare County:

Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC) continues execution of two simultaneous solutions to restore transmission service to Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands. The progress made to each of these solutions narrows the timeframe for complete transmission restoration for Hatteras Island to 6 – 10 days.

Evacuation for all visitors to Hatteras Island remains in effect until adequate and reliable power service is available to meet the demand. County officials will continue to closely monitor the progress of restoration efforts so that visitors can be allowed reentry to the island as soon as possible.

For updated information from CHEC regarding power restoration, visit www.chec.coop/ or their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CapeHatterasElectricCoop/

Currently, Essential Personnel (Priority One), Permanent Residents & Essential Personnel for Critical Businesses (Priority Two), and Non-Resident Property Owners & Non-Resident Employees of Non-Critical Businesses (Priority Three) are allowed access to Hatteras Island with proper reentry credentials. Details regarding reentry procedures are available at darenc.com/reentry. As you approach the checkpoint north of the Bonner Bridge, please have your license, reentry pass, or tax bill readily available.

For those on Hatteras Island, it is important to remember that mandatory power and water conservation measures remain in effect. All Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC) customers must remove air conditioning systems and hot tub heaters from the power grid by turning off system circuit breakers. In addition, mandatory water restrictions are in place prohibiting the filling of pools or hot tubs, the watering of lawns, and the watering of driveways or sidewalks for cleaning.

For any updates regarding the mandatory evacuation for Hatteras Island, visit www.darenc.com. Text “join hatteraspower” to 30890 to receive text message alerts.

You would do fine on the beach as long as you air down and watch out for the deep ruts left by the people who don't air down and cut the sand deep. If you get stuck don't feel bad, normally help is close by. Just bring the essentials like a shovel, air guage, jack with good base boards to keep it from sinking and 2 boards like an 8 foot 2x6 cut in half. I see lots of SUVs and cars stuck a lot. Those are the fools. Big thing is to AIR DOWN

    Latest Update

After pursuing all options, the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative (CHEC) has determined that constructing a new overhead transmission line at the south end of the Bonner Bridge is the most expedient way to restore transmission service to Hatteras Island. Crews are working on the overhead line and the timeframe for restoring power to Hatteras Island is now 3 – 5 days. County officials are working closely with CHEC to coordinate the safe return of visitors as soon as possible.

CHEC is issuing morning and evening updates regarding power restoration efforts. To access this information, visit www.chec.coop/ or their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/CapeHatterasElectricCoop/

A mandatory evacuation remains in place for visitors to Hatteras Island. Currently, Essential Personnel (Priority One), Permanent Residents & Essential Personnel for Critical Businesses (Priority Two), and Non-Resident Property Owners & Non-Resident Employees of Non-Critical Businesses (Priority Three) are allowed access to Hatteras Island with proper reentry credentials. Details regarding reentry procedures are available at darenc.com/reentry.

Dare County Emergency Management has determined that water resources are adequate to meet present demands and has lifted the mandatory water restriction that was in place for Hatteras Island.

For those on Hatteras Island, it is important to remember that mandatory power conservation measures remain in effect.

For any updates regarding the mandatory evacuation for Hatteras Island, visit www.darenc.com. Text “join hatteraspower” to 30890 to receive text message alerts.
