You'll have to jump through hoops to get the stealership to actually check it physically.

They can't just write up a service ticket to say "customer wants transmission fluid checked".

Some people have said that they told their sales rep that the deal was contingent on them checking the trans fluid but I have doubts that the dealerships are doing more than just checking via techstream.

Thats exactly what mine did. Went in for my 5000 mile maintenance, told them I was concerned about the transmission fluid and that there is a lot of talk about them being a quart low. She added it to the ticket and when I came to pick it up she said they checked it and it was fine. Whether they actually did or not I have no idea but I have the copy of the ticket that says they supposedly checked it.

Welcome to Tacoma World, OP. You have questioned the integrity and perfection of the Third Gen Tacoma. I hope you came prepared to take on a shit storm from the Third Gen Knight's Templar, The Royal Defenders (aka TRD).

Amazing thread. OP, practice your search. I am a new owner and, even though I have tried really hard, cannot seem to find a question or topic that has not been answered or discussed in this subforum. Maybe your google-fu is weak?

No known massive failures so far, I wouldn't worry about it.
Of the last three Toyota vehicles I have owned that had a dipstick, I never bother to check them. The last one I traded it with almost 200k ran like new, transmission never shifted any better.
The only reason I didn't keep it is why pay insurance on a spare. And try telling the Insurance company you can only drive one vehicle at a time! HA!
But tbh, I can't wait for ten years into the future when no one will even realize these things have some ATF on them. If it fails, It won't be for the lack of ATF but for the overload on it.

My 2017 TRD Sport, built in February 2017, was not low fluid, does not have the rear diff recall and already had the Transmission TSB done. Just fyi.

If that's what makes you "think twice" about getting a new tacoma, then don't bother getting one.

The tranny fluids were a little low from the factory yes, but there is plenty of info on these forums on how you can check it yourself. And as others have already stated, just have them check it before you take ownership of the truck. If you are already up at arms about some of the issues these trucks are having, then move along.

You certainly can make them actually do it. And I have a service invoice showing that they physically checked my tranny fluid and it was found to be slightly low, so they filled it.. I also checked it myself later on, just in case they lied to me, and it was perfectly full, not over, not under.

You tell them that the sale is contingent on that point, and that you want verification that it was physically checked, and they will do it.

Sorry OP for this off topic comment but I am so tired of the so called "forum police" that have nothing better to do than point out that topics have already been covered. If you do not want to participate in a thread ignore it, no reason to be a jerk. People come to these things for answers and often times individual attention and also to participate in a conversation. If the same topics were not discussed several times how long would a site like this last? Also I am tired of the entitled pricks who think they own a forum (this is a problem on all forums, not just TW) because they happen to post on it all the time, GET A LIFE lol!

Those guys who say "search" are trying to help you. Really. How? Here are the steps. Try to follow along:
    1. A brand new problem, question, thought or issue is posted in a new thread.
    2. MANY are interested in it, because it is new!
    3. KNOWLEDGEABLE people post their opinions, fixes or links in that thread and take time to do it right.
    4. The thread becomes a valuable resource in the TW library and maybe even stickied.
    5. One week later a lazy person posts the exact same problem, question, thought or issue before even searching.
    6. Those many KNOWLEDGEABLE people see it, realize they just answered that question a week ago and move along.
    7. Other posters decide to chime in and post but the info is not nearly as good or relevant.
    8. The thread goes in several directions by people with no knowledge.
    9. Someone who knows there is a good thread out there with the answers tells you to "search."
    10. Someone comes along and calls those knowledgeable people "jerks" for telling people to search.
    11. One week later another person starts a thread on the exact same topic....
    12....

The point is the best information is usually found in the original thread. Do you think that person who had the answer to the problem is going to keep posting the answer every time the question is asked? Um, no.

This observation brought to you by a noob.
