    Hey Guys and Gals,

I'm new to the TW forum and this is my first official post. My question is in reference to the Gen 2 Taco TRD Sport with the hood scoop. The hood scoop looks bad-ass, but I always though it was so stupid that it is a fake scoop that does not let air into the engine. Has anyone replaced the OEM fake scoop with a functioning one? Or is it as simple as popping out the plastic that is blocking the grate? Any thoughts on making the scoop fully-functioning?

Even a REAL functioning hood scoop would do nothing for Tacomas, the scoops are just for looks only.

Legend has it you can cut a real hood scoop on these Tacomas and run 10 second quarter miles. But then you and the mad scientist might have to go in an replace those piston rings you fry.

I bought a scooped hood off of ebay and bought the scoop "insert" and outer bezel. I ended up just installing the outer (colormatched) bezel and then left the black screen/"insert" out because I couldn't figure out what hardware to use to mount the insert. Doesn't make the scoop functional, but it's open now and I like the way it looks

I agree with Ryan L on the search bar being useful.

The hood scoop and the intake are not even in the same part of the engine bay, if you look at the intake it's off to the passenger side.
All a functional hood scoop would accomplish would be to cool the plastic engine cover.

However, some guys have done light bars in the hood scoop.
That's about all I've seen to improve the hood scoop besides aesthetics.

also, that area of the hood is in a low pressure area which would negate any gains of it being a ram air intake.

Skewps are only good for shining sun directly in your eyes.... hence why i dont have one.

Just making it open to the engine compartment would also likely reduce air flow through the radiator--even if plumbed to the intake it would do nothing, "ram air" is a myth...

That's why I don't have a hood scoop either, reflection is bad if you live in a sunny state.

I cut the back plastic out of my scoop to let air in when moving and heat out when stopped. It acts somewhat like a chimney. On really hot days I can see some heat waves coming out of it. I don't have any problems with the engine getting dirty too fast or anything.

I've seen a dude from Mexico fab up a scoop over the intake box and ran it directly into the box. I'll try to find the link.

Sounds good. So moral of the story... it's just for looks and don't worry about it. Might try and cut out the black plastic inside the scoop like wade9986 recommended, but otherwise, just gonna leave it alone and find something else to tinker with on my Taco. Thanks everybody for the input.....
