I'm looking to get a good deep sound and not sure which exhaust would be best. I am willing to go dual exhaust but if I could get a good deep sound out of a single that'd work. I know it won't sound like a V8, but I'd like to get a good deep sound if possible

TRD Exhaust is awesome. Slight drone at lower RPM's when lugging the truck but otherwise it's great. Very mellow and deep.

Duals on these trucks sound like dog shit.

    Keep your stock exhaust

Seriously, if you think you are going to get a good sound out of our standard 90ish deg banked v6 you are going to be sorely disappointed.

I'm not looking for anything crazy, just what I have now sounds a bit ricey and was seeing if any other options for it to sound better are out there. I've been told Borla sounds decent, and of course flowmaster

I like mine... JBA headers with a Dynomax cat-back. I have dual outlets, but not a true dual exhaust. Nice deep tone, not raspy at all.

Flowmaster always sounds terrible to me, too much resonance and popping.

12" Cherry bomb glasspack. Sounds good on accelerating and make a turn down before axle. It will be a matter of time before some one says they sound more ricer, which once you try it you see that they are wrong. Plus for $40 max thats a bonus

I did enough research based off 'good' YouTube posts featuring cold starts and warm starts, drive bys, etc.. concluded I'd either go with TRD or Borla. Borla is probably a tad louder than TRD while still avoiding cabin drone noise, and the muffler is polished.

I'm a car stereo guy though, and decided not to buy either as I needed to keep the vehicle noise as quiet as possible. People don't realize how much music sound volume is lost at at high way speed due to road noise.

In all reality its not worth it from a performance standpoint.
However, i ended up getting a MBRP cat back when my frame was replaced. The stocker was a little rough and i figured, what the hell since everything else is new under there.
I did tons of research also and saw the TRD and borla. I almost pulled the trigger on a TRD but waited to hear an MBRP in person. MBRP sounds superior to both and also not as loud. Thats what i was looking for personally. Plus the price for the DIY MBRP is pretty unbeatable.
It has a faint lumpyness like a V8 but obviously not a V8, does not sound ricey at all, is nice and mellow and can only really hear it from 1500-2k rpm.

    to each is own though

If you're not looking for anything crazy or too loud, the TRD Performance Exhaust is a good choice. It's loud enough without being too obnoxious. Has a good loping sound at idle and doesn't drone out the cabin on the freeway. At full throttle I really like the sound of my supercharger whining up front and the low rumble in the back from the exhaust. It's a good combination. Plus, it's made by Toyota, a true OEM part.

Do you monitor AFRs? I know the TRD flash is rich as a pig but I've avoided looking at exhausts because I'm concerned about a lean condition with the S/C.

@ToyTaco06 - It is very difficult to make most V6 engines sound anything close to good. Let alone the 4.0 on the Taco.

I've done Long Tube Headers, a Resonator, and a Spintech 6000 Muffler. Done a K&N CAI (and later removed it). Not easy to get a real rumble from a V6. And if you do get a little rumble at low RPM under load it goes away quickly as you increase in RPMs.

Video Note: This was before I took the K&N CAI off. You can hear a rattle noise during acceleration. This went away the instant the CAI came off. And the motor is much quieter and driving the truck much more enjoyable. Do not do a CAI. They sound annoying after a while and do nothing for ya!

If your going for a pure sound improvement then I would also vote for the TRD setup. Of course this sort of thing is very personal, but I feel like the TRD exhaust on the Toyota 6 cylinder has a very charming and familiar sound. Just my two cents :D

Yes, I have a AF/R gauge and boost gauge. The TRD flash is rich for safety, but I feel the combination of my aFe CAI and TRD exhaust balance it out somewhat by providing more air and better flow. I wouldn't worry about the TRD exhaust causing a lean condition in the S/C, since it is more tame than other aftermarket exhausts. Plus, its an OEM part, had mine installed by a Toyota Tech and still covered under warranty. I have a pair of JBA cat4ward shorty headers too, but have not installed those yet...
