Tranny fluid question

I like a lot of other Tacoma 5 speeders have a slight problem when shifting into 2nd gear from first. it will sometimes catch or skip off the syncros or "chunk". What I have noticed though is when the temp is above 50 degrees outside I rarely have a problem; also when the truck warms up the 2nd gear issue in cold weather is less reoccurring.

With that said is there any tranny fluid that is good for shifting in colder temperatures? I have tried synthetic and not impressed (actually worse redline mt90). Or is there an option to put a tranny warmer/blanket on to keep temp above 50 in all weather conditions? Just curious if anyone had experience with this...thanks for you time!!

 

Try a different synthetic....

Believe it or not, but synthetics are different and can react differently to different transmissions. I owned a Jeep Wrangler and almost everyone recommended Redline MT90 because for some reason, Mobile 1 did something to the brass in the tranny...??? Weird.... but I had MT90 in there for 7 years with great success.

I'd try Mobile 1........

If that doesn't help, perhaps the tranny is starting to wear. How many miles on it?

 

^ I haven't used it myself yet, but I hear the Redline MT90 is great in these transmissions. I plan on using it in the future.

 

thanks guys for the headsup. the redline was fine when it was warm out but as soon as it got cold it was like stirring molasses. I also ran mobile 1 synthetic and same as redline. I went to the valvoline mineral and i have had the best results. the turck has 12,400 miles on it and has been doing it since day 1. But it has gotten better. I dunno maybe it s still breaking in but it seems like there should be a fluid or a warmer that would help smooth it out.

 

Mine does this too and from what I've read others have had the same complaint about the shifting. I think I've read that the dealers even said that the rough shifting was normal.

The URD short shifter improves things, but there is a noticeable difference when the temperature is colder outside. I run AMSoil

$30 75w-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75w-90 in mine. It also did it with whatever oil was in there before when I bought the truck used. I've heard good things about Redline MT-90, but haven't tried it. I just take it easy on it until the oil gets circulated. I've got a little over 90k and it hasn't broken down yet, hopefully it won't.

 

I just put the URD short shifter in mine and I smile every time i shift...do it
