Put 255/85/16s on stock OR wheels and suspension

I was just trying to see what the possibilities are. Regear is no question for me. I came from driving stick the past 20 years, and when I did the regear in my 4Runner to 5.29s with my 35s it was fantastic. I will look into and see what happens

 

Let us know how that goes. I'd love to see the 3G forums have more useful information and less 'This truck sucks'

Went on some janky "county roads" in Colorado this week. Tires did great, and also did great on the pavement on mountain roads, including when I drive it like a sports car, much to the chagrin of my wife lol.

Thanks! Interesting side note, I think my truck had altitude sickness the first day out here. It had no pull and I had to pretty much drive up every hill in 1st. Felt like it was gasping for air. Second day it was back to normal.

I've read through this and haven't heard anybody who's made the change comment of the drivability (acceleration/MPG etc etc) with the 255/85/16s on a stock G3...can we hear some feedback on that? Thanks!

 

I can speak to a manual transmission. I've noticed a very slight impact to acceleration but not enough that it affects my day to day driving at all. I've noticed I have to slip the clutch a little bit longer to get the truck going from a stop, but once its moving it feels fine. I've driven the KM2's on wet roads, and in heavy rain, which are two areas that they get hit alot for not being the best, but I've not really had any issues with sliding or losing grip. I have not yet taken them to the limit turning- for day to day regular driving I don't have a reason to- but they've held up to some pretty spirited driving on canyon roads in Colorado recently.

MPGs seem a little bit lower but by my math I still get in the low 20s on highway trips and high teens around town, which was typical before.

The only gripe I really have about them is a general mud tire gripe- if you're on uneven pavement or go through alot of potholes/bumps/etc., they sometimes grab a little weird and you get pulled very slightly in a direction you didn't expect. It's never made me feel like I was in danger since it's fixed by a tiny correction, but it's a little annoying. I knew that would happen and still don't regret the choice of tire. The noise isn't noticeable with KM2's at anything below interstate speeds, and even there it isn't obnoxious. You hear it, but it's easy enough to tune out or drown out with music or conversation.

I think 255/85/16s are the perfect size tire for this truck. But I don't think I can go any bigger than stock without a re-gear (I'm coming from a 2005 Double Cab Tundra with the 4.7 liter V8...most perfect truck size/power ever IMHO, and I totaled it, but that's another story... ) and this motor just feels anemic in comparison. Too much shifting already (I have an AT) and I fear the 255s would make it even worse. I'd love to get these but I'll probably wait till I'm out of warranty and throw $5-7K at it all at once (suspension/tires/re-gear/ECU tune (assuming there is a quality one available)).

 

Honestly I feel like these tires make the trans hold the lower gear longer and it actually helps through the hills. I haven't noticed a bad change with my truck. That's just me though.
