    Hey all,

Went to get in my truck this morning and there was a huge puddle of oil under it (doesn't normally leak). I know a whole lot of nothing about cars so forgive my ignorance.

    Please see video https://youtu.be/n6IGh8LZPwo

Oil level is low on the dipstick. I started it up briefly which slightly increased the leak flow. I've posted a video below which shows where the leak is coming from (as far as I can tell).

It seems more likely to be differential fluid (4X4) than motor oil, but it looks, smells, and feels identical to the motor oil, and the low oil seems convincing.

I'd appreciate any feedback on what may be causing the leak.

    Thanks!

That's your steering rack. It is filled with automatic transmission fluid. It will need to be replaced....Check your PS fluid reservoir.

My 99 had a similar problem. I was surprised to find Lucas Stop Leak has stopped it (or actually, slowed it significantly). Whereas before the stop leak was added I would have to refill every 1-2 days, I now go about 3 months before I throw a mix of stop leak and ATF Dex III in the PS reservoir. Obviously, a new rack is in both our futures, but I have been saving money for the time being. May be worth a shot, although your leak does look pretty bad (worse than mine)

I'd be a little concerned with all that rust as well

PS rack as others have said.

Low engine oil needs to be addressed, but not related. Check it more often.

Your PS reservoir will be empty or close to it.

The reason it looks like oil instead of the normal ATF it runs is because it's original, dirty, and is washing out through the grease of the splines.

If you're lucky some stop leak 'may' swell the seal enough to slow the leak. But you now need to check it daily and keep it topped up.

As well as shopping for a new or re-manufactured rack, and some quality independent mechanic to install it for you.
