Let us know how it goes..

The problem isn't only that the oil breaks down over time. The other big problem is the carbon deposits and other contaminants in the oil.

Why are you spending tens of thousands of dollars on a truck and then pinching pennies when it comes to properly maintaining it?

That is why you do a oil analysis. Proper maintenance is not frequent oil changes. I would recommend that you research a little.

Yeah spend $25-30 for Blackstone to tell us we need to change...when we can do an oil change for same coin and not worry about it.

Keep in mind, these ads are there to sell a product. It may be true that the oil can safely go 20K but I bet that is under the most mild of conditions. No towing, no excessive heat, no dusty conditions etc.

Laboratory testing of motor oil may make sense and be a viable maintenance procedure when tens or hundreds of gallons of oil per change are required, however IMO for plain ol' consumer use it is nothing more than a "feel good" exercise, perhaps useful to gather as history of engine wear--or for someone looking to save to world 5 qts at a time.

My grandfather told me nearly 60 years ago "Oil is cheaper than engines."; this it is no less true today than it was in 1958. My wife and I routinely keep our cars for 250k to 400k miles--her '89 Celica has the record at 435k, my '85 Corolla an "also ran" at 385k. On them all engine oil was/is changed at 2500 to 3500 mile intervals--for any engine, any fresh clean oil is always better than any used oil--that is an inescapable fact.

Test away if that floats your boat, but for that same $28 you could just load up new oil and be 100% certain it's OK for another 3500 - 5000 miles...

No silly you don't do a oil analysis every time. You do one to check wear metals. If it tests good your good to go. I don't test my oil at all just stick with 10000 miles. I did used oil analysis in the past and all tested well.

One check provides an indication of what wore during the period of time over which the sample oil was run--100k miles (or even 10k miles) later things will change. Unless you do it to establish a baseline against which to compare future analyses a single test is nearly pointless (though It's not inconceivable that a single test might alert to some impending significant failure).

UOA is very commonly done for aviation engines on a routine basis. Of course in that case you really, really, really don't want your engine to stop unexpectedly. Also the engines themselves are very expensive and anything you can do to ensure they are being maintained to maximize the life of the engine or time between overhaul is money well spent. But the analysis isn't to try to extend the change interval of course - it is specifically to analyze what is wearing and happening inside the engine and whether any corrective action is needed. And it is done routinely, not just once.

For routine passenger vehicle use just doing the standard interval makes sense and skip testing unless you are entertained by the analysis (and honestly it is some nerdy fun).

I am presently testing mine because I have an unusual use case. Vehicle is only used a few times a year but each time used puts on about 500 miles mostly highway. If I went with the recommended interval (5K or 6 months) then I would have to change the oil every other time I use the truck with less than 1k miles on the oil - which is of course insane. Since the recommended interval doesn't apply I'm left with testing to see what I'm comfortable with. I'll be making the decision on change interval based on time rather than mileage given my use. Likely will be 18 to 24 months - unless some particular trip is longer than usual and puts enough miles on to hit 5 or 6k well before then. I'm using Mobil 1 Extended Performance and have no plans to try this new AP given the cost. Based on analysis so far the EP has plenty of additive package to handle with low mileage but longer time interval.

    Here's another:

Unfortunately far too many drivers spend their days driving 5 to 10 mile "commutes/trips" and the oil never gets hot enough to boil off the combustion by-product nasties--this is severe duty, not "being babied". Then along comes Mobil with an ad campaign touting some re-marketed (not reformulated, just re-marketed) same ol' stuff and tells them they can go "one year or 20k miles". They ignore the "one year" part and wait 20k (or 22 or 24 or whatever) miles and then maybe get it changed. Though it doesn't really matter to them as they trade every 2-3 years. It does matter big time to the poor slob that buys the POS the dealer auctioned off to the "Buy here/Pay here" lot (the dealer sniffed the oil filler hole and said screw this).

The quality of engine oil; claimed, perceived, or otherwise; has very little to no effect on the by-products of combustion that contaminate it--zero, zilch, nada. Short commutes/trips are the most severe duty there is, especially in colder climes, and in that duty engine oil needs to be changed each 3k miles or sooner; regardless of what miracle juice you buy. In fact this is the duty in which testing the crap periodically to determine when it's shot would do the most good--kinda like what taxi companies and local cops do...

My suggestion is to research it. If you are doing short trips you will not get too many miles on the oil as it should be changed at 12 months. Showing a picture of a motor that has been neglected is not indicative of using a quality oil in a properly maintained engine and extending the interval responsibly. The picture of sludge in the motor is more than likely a motor that has not had oil changes done, run low on oil, and add oil when the light comes on. This would be typical in some leased vehicles or people that don't care. The people that don't care are not going to buy expensive synthetic lubricants. In fact they won't even check the dipstick as you can clearly see in the photo.

The ever popular oil change debate. I change mine every 5k with a quality dino oil and quality filter.

I have every expectation of making it to 300k....maybe more.

Unfortunately I did not get the oil tested when I changed it. I was in the process of buying/selling a home and got cheap and didn’t want to pay the fee and postage to have it tested.

I may redo the test in the future once life is less hectic.

The oil looked fine coming out when I changed it. But that means nothing without the lab numbers lol
