We don't have any kids. Just furry four legged beasts. The three below our ours. We also foster sick/injured Pitbulls until they are healthy and can be adopted.

Sam is our Chubby Corgie adopted from one of my coworkers.

Schinitzel is my wife's neurotic baby. He is completely stressed when she is not right next to him.
    sick

Shelby is the only one of the bunch I picked and is my baby. She is a small pit and scared of everything. But she is happy to sunbath out back.

I wanted a dog when I was in college. Best decision I ever made was to wait until I got out. Its not fair to you or the dog. And if you think your roommates are going to watch him/her while you're at class, don't count on it. A puppy is very moldable when young and you never know what your roommates are doing with it while you're away. Just my 2 cents.

Get a girlfriend or boyfriend with a dog instead. You get to enjoy a dog without the responsibility. You're going to want a big yard before getting the sized dog you want.

A dog is a big responsibility. Unlike a kid, your dog depends on you for everything for his/her entire life. Your social life will suffer. Places you want to go, you won't be able to cause you cannot find someone to watch the dog. You'll be driving home thinking "I need xyz" and you cannot stop at the store cause your dog is in the back seat and it's 80*F out. Dogs take a lot of time.

I could go on about the negatives of owning a dog but you get the idea, there are more than a few. The best part? You roll home and your dog is happy to see you. Lots of a fun. But please, if you cannot devote the time, do not get a dog-not fair to you or the dog.

That said, apartments aren't great places for Labradors. Something in the 35-40 pounds max would be my recommendation.

Thanks for the input, Joe. She's not usually a jumper like that but now and then she loses her mind when it comes to fetch!
What area of Montana are you in? I'm coming up there next month for a fly fishing vacation, based out of Bozeman.

    Cheers,

I have a Bengal that will fetch. But only if you throw women's hair ties. The circle elastic ones. His favorite thing in the world.

I can echo others here. If you're in college still focus on that. I waited more than two years after my divorce to get a dog because I didn't own house with a yard. Not fair to a dog to be stuck inside an apartment all day.

Living alone with a puppy is hard too. I'm gone 9 hours a day for work. House breaking a puppy like that is hard. Stopped going to the gym for months because I couldn't take 2 hours longer to get home and let puppy out after 8-9 hours at work.

You can't take your dog everywhere. They can't live in your truck during classes, work, etc. They need care, feeding, walking, obedience training, etc. They will become whomever you teach them to become. If you can't give them time, exercise, and attention they'll end up in a rescue or city pound.

I just learned the hard way this weekend that putting the dog in a boarding kennel so i could go to a non-pet friendly national park to go camping was a bad idea. Paid $72 to board my pup. The next day I paid $218 to an emergency vet because my dog was puking and spraying fluid out her crap hole. And her back toe nails were so worn down they bled.

It wasn't fair to her that I left her for 3 days and 2 nights. She suffered and so did my wallet. Two days later she's still recuperating, getting her appetite back, and trying to form solid stools.

As someone else mentioned a dog can impact your social life too. You can't crash at someone else's house on a whim because you drank alcohol, met some cool romantic interest, etc. Your dog expects your return and needs food, water, and exercise.

I've got a greyhound, and he's amazing. The hugest couch potato there ever was!! We live in a townhouse, so he only gets walks and he's happy and fit as can be. He's also crated for 8 hours while we're at work, and has no problems with that at all, since they're so used to crates. Potty training is super easy, and he never barks unless we're really playing. I'm obviously biased though :D

    Well said.
I refused to go on vacation with my wife and kids for years because I did not want to board my dogs for those same reasons. Our pit mix was lost without her mommy, and I like to think that my Dane would hate being away from me.

I don't cage any of my dogs while I'm gone at work, especially for 6 to 10 hours, 5 days a week. That's not cool IMO.

My dogs are trained to go out the doggy door in the yard to do their business.

They have the whole house to walk around, free to go outside anytime, got the whole couch to nap on, a big bowl of water to drink out of, play with the other dogs and toys. Yes they are spoiled but good dogs.

Also if someone breaks into your house....how is your dog gonna protect the house in a cage?

I'm familiar with the losing-the-mind thing. The other day I picked up the throw stick with ball and the old one jumped down three stairs. Couldn't stop him. That is the highlight of his day.
We live about 300 miles from Bozeman, west side of the divide. Have fun with your fly fishing, should be a blast!

Every dog is different, and some need to be crated. At least in their younger years.

I'm not looking for a puppy, probably gonna get an adult dog. It'll never be in a cage or anything. Definitely gonna go to the pound. But yeah I'll have a doggy door and it can go wherever it wants during the day and walks in the evening. Not gonna do training or anything bc I dont need a show dog or some shit lol. But thanks for yalls inputs. Will probably just wait till I get the house and then see whats available at a shelter and go from there

Crate training isn't a punishment. If done correctly, the dogs actually look forward to going into them. My dog has asked to go into his crate to sleep since he was 3 months old. Same with my previous dog. If I throw him in the crate for a short time, I can open the door, he'll continue to sleep. I recommend doing research on properly crate training dogs if you are against. It saves your house from destruction, chewed up personal belongings etc. The dogs actually look forward to going in it.

Couldn't agree more. Some people are against it but my guess is they just don't know much about it. It's great peace of mind knowing I'm going to go home to an intact house.
