Perhaps the newer trucks are more expensive not because of inflation but because just happen to be bigger, more powerful and have more comforts :D

Also...i do not share your opinion that you get twice the truck for a little more money. If anything you are paying more for a bigger vehicle with more comforts not necesarily a better offroad machine.

IMHO...from all the Tacomas the best value for your money from a wheeling stand point is a 1st gen tacomna with the 3.4. Better overall balance between size, power, and comfort.

Wow, those were expensive. No wonder I couldn't find a nice clean 1st gen for a decent price. Now I feel better about paying 24.4 :D

    BRAP!

Willing to bet 90% of all Tacomas are bought for onroad capabilities / manners than its ability to crawl around offroad otherwise we wouldn't see all these threads about lack of power seats, cruise control holding 6th at 70, Entune connectivity or rattles / hum/ vibrations at speed.

As it stands you're getting more value for the money now than you were in the past. My 91 was essentially the same truck technology-wise as my 04 but cost almost 1/2 as much. My 16 is a much more capable truck than any of my previous 4 and when dollars are adjusted for inflation, the same price.

I agree. I bought my truck knowing a gravel parking lot is the extent of my off-roading.

Are you taking into consideration that people's incomes may have not been increasing to offset inflation? In that's the case, there's really nothing much to adjust.

Anyway...newer trucks more capable? With comforts and luxury, yes. But Not necessarily in off road performance. Along with the luxury/comforts in the newer trucks come the longer wheel base, wider and overall heavier rig. Depending on where you wheel, that's a liability.

You are right about how things have changed. Back in the day the Toyota crowd was known for their passion for wheeling. People did not care much about fancy things in their rigs.

People want luxury and fancy things for comfortable highway rides, so that's what the market is about now.

there are 12 used 2016's on the lot near where I live and they range from 29k to 31k. IMHO, I would sell the mods, then sell the truck for what you can get, then save your money and buy something you can afford or finance for less than 3 years with a minimum of 30-40% down if you can...just saying, vehicles are just not worth it if you do not plan on keeping them for double the life of the loan...they are money pits...

Dude you could've gotten a 2016 or for 34,000 and put that other 10 grand into mods, should've covered everything. A complete build

    Sell Sell Sell....

EDIT: Realized I got the purchase price wrong on the new car, even more of a reason to sell while the truck is basically new

Obviously I am biased with a 2017 Taco. But I was looking used and it actually made more sense to buy a 3rd gen new because the resale value was so high in my area.

OP, my 2 cents, sell mods, keep truck. Good luck and sorry that you're in a bind. Hopefully you can learn from this and come out stronger!!

sell sell sell, you forget something...

the frame was cut (cab mount chop) and it is now out of spec and the vehicle
crash rating is nullified (unknown) after that type of modification. this is beyond 'add-ons' this is 'frame redesign'. there is no crash data for that modification. due to this 'unknown'

it makes selling, without added liability, a ton more complicated, and even if sold, and if it gets in a wreck, and someone gets killed, the original seller could be on the hook for anything a lawyer or insurance company wants to dig into.

best bet is a) keep it or b) full disclosure and sell to someone who specifically wants the mods and will sign and notarize that they accept the modification

Just get a plate welded over it, no one will notice if he doesn't say anything

Sell mods. Go to bank with the money from said mods tell them you would like to refi, put that money towards the 7 year refi.

If someone dies in a wreck in it, someone will notice. Best to disclose and not get your ass sued off later.

Actually putting 4k towards the truck and extending the financing terms to 7 years lowers the payments to around $510 monthly. But... Thanks so much for playing.:hattip:

This may have already been asked, but why in the world was the entire vehicle price financed? Were you in such a hard place in needing a new vehicle that you had nothing? If that is the case, why choose to spend $45k as opposed to half that with reasonable payments. #adulting

No meme there, Just the OP balling out from the excellent financial advice given by the TW Credit Analyst's!!!!!

Seriously though, Im just as right as you are. Way too many variables to take into account.

Real world - If 84 Months over 60 would have been a financially strong move then the OP would have done that in the first place during his Due diligence. I'm willing to bet no lender would finance an auto note at 2% for 84mo. On a depreciating asset, most would agree that is not wise. But lets shake the magic 8 ball and go for gold!!!!

Ill sell my 1st gen to the op for $8,000, let me kick him in the balls, then he can put $30,000 into it and still come out ahead

Sell it, get a 1st gen. I'm sure a $100/mo payment is better than $500/mo or whatever a $45k 5 year finance would be.

Change the ball joints on a 1st gen once every 100k miles and that's pretty much all the maintenance you need to 'worry' about, save for the frame rust.
