UPDATE - I had to sell the quad, for health (and other) reasons.

Apparently, repeating the sequence of 400 lbs of ATV violently coming up from the whoops, and 200 lbs of ME coming down, with the impact point at the base of my spine will rupture cervical discs and damage vertebrae. T8/9, in my case. The pain is constant and exquisite in nature...

The dirt bike is lighter, has a much more compliant suspension, and is (mostly) ridden standing on the pegs, so it's not as punishing. But after a day of riding, Ibuprofen is my friend, for about a week to 10 days.

    God, I hate getting old...

Nothing yet. Old truck had the works.
Quads are better for hunting and work use for as well as pleasure. Try and put your guns, coolers, and a dead animal onto your dirt bike. Also IMHO don't get a 2wd quad. 4wd is so much safer and better get around. I mean quads are only for off road. Get 4x4. Plus going up steep hills i know in 2wd its easier to flip the quad right back on yourself if you gun it whereas in 4wd you can gun it and it just pulls right up the steepest hills. And even tho its said not to its easier to fit a passenger on your quad. Dirt bikes you can too but you kinda need an extended seat at least.

Quads are also more expensive and can be hard to get out of some situations. If you do flip a quad too good luck flipping 500 lbs back over by yourself. It is not easy... Also you can fit easily fit 2 dirt bikes in the same space as 1 quad. For example trucks or trailers.

Dirt bikes can go just about anywhere. If you can walk on the path you can ride a bike on it. Quads need more room on the trail which limits where they can go. Dirtbikes do not. Bikes also get better gas mpg if that matters to you. Easier to go on extended trips like on that trip that crosses most of the country without hitting much pavement. Plus you can get an Enduro and it be legal on the roads which is a definite plus.

Pros and cons to each. If moneys no object get both.

I can get anywhere on my 400EX sport quad that the big 4x4's can, it's all about the rider. Plus the sport quads are way more fun and challenging. Only time I fall short is in deep mud, but I hate mud and avoid it best I can anyway. With good tires, it's excellent in snow, light enough that it doesn't sink like a weight and rides on top of it.

That's my problem with my Banshee, the thing's a demon! So I end up riding the 400EX most times, because it's tame in comparison.

This is a pretty good summary of what I was going to post. A few asides or additions:
-- Consider your crashing preference. When you go down, a dirt bike will often fall on your leg. Quads don't fall over, they roll, usually on top of you. Pick your poison because eventually you will go down.
-- While quads don't tip over (again, they roll), their normally stable nature provides a false sense of security. "I won't fall because this thing has 4 wheels, right?" Take a turn too fast and/or too sharp and see what happens. Or go up a steep hill and turn sideways, you might roll down the hill sideways - flop bang ouch. A dirt bike can lean into the hill without an issue. Of course a quad can turn around on a hill, but you MUST keep the speed up or... it will likely roll. On the same token, a dirt bike can catch you high sided -- if you lean over too far downhill you will fall because the downhill surface is too far to reach and keep yourself upright.
-- Quads stir up a TON of dust, having twice as many tires and they are usually wider tires too.

You just have to ride it like a snowmachine. Stand on the uphill side of the running boards and lean your weight backwards into the hill while driving. It usually works and if you lose it you're already up hill of the rolling ATV.
