I've been offered a Toyota Hilux Diesel in Canada - is it a good deal?

Buy RHD 2002 Hilux Tiger Diesel from Thailand or local 2010ish Tacoma? (price and kms about same)

  1. I would buy the Hilux Tiger Diesel from Thailand.

    Hi all,

Here is a question for you: I have been offered a 2002 Toyota Hilux Tiger 4x4, with the famed D4D diesel engine. It's a right-hand drive truck from Thailand. It's in great shape mechanically and visually, it's got about 145tkm on it and has been used in Bangkok as a company truck, so it's not a miled-out farm mule. The truck has been mechanically inspected and I will get it completely street-legal and ready to register, with all papers and out of province inspection here in Alberta. The price I'm being asked is CAD$28,000 (roughly USD$21,000). I would love to drive what is essentially an indestructible Tacoma diesel. Another cool thing is that there isn't another one like that around in, like, North America!
Now, here's my question: Seeing that I could get a 2009-2013 Tacoma with about the same mileage for that money locally, should I buy the Diesel Hilux? Would you buy it? What are your thoughts? I'd really appreciate the help as I'm trying to make my decision.

    Thanks!

    This.

Unless you have plenty of money to spare and want one as a second fun vehicle. I would not DD a RHD import for the sear fact of finding replacement parts.

It's going to be pretty slow. Fine for regular driving but if you live in a big city it will be hairy merging onto the freeway.

Thanks everyone for your feedback. Almost all of you who commented said buying a RHD Hilux Diesel is a bad idea because of the difficulty of getting parts alone. I have taken that on board and won't buy it.
Interestingly in the survey, 30% said they'd buy the Hilux from Thailand. This makes me think of when the first JDM RHD vehicles were imported by enthusiasts - they must have had similar problems with parts at the beginning? Maybe as the JDM import market picked up, the parts became less of a problem and this would take a bit of time with the Hilux Diesel trucks as well. Anyhow, thanks for your feedback!

RHD Hilux... No, thanks. There is nothing desirable in 2.5 D-4D, I'd rather drive 4.0 V6. Especially because you get cheap gas there.

Way overpriced too, half off and I'd still say don't.

Is this going to be your daily driver? Then no way. To much money and time to get parts, and mechanics have never seen the type of vehicle.

As a 2nd fun vehicle just because it's cool? Sure as long as you can afford it and have the knowledge to fix it yourself.
