So I'm thinking of Coming back to the Tacoma side after owning a Tundra 4.6L for the past 2.5yrs. As title states I'm trying to decide whether I want a 2nd or 3rd Gen. The late 2nd Gens are extremely solid platforms. I have driven a couple of 1GR/A750s and loved them. The MPGs kinda suck though. Also the pricing is more to my liking.
3rd Gens have a lot of nicer stuff on them and I like the looks but a lot of guys seem to be complaining about the 2GR/AC60. Also the 3rd gens seems to having a lot of teething issues. The torque peak at 4K rpms seems way to high to me. I DO NOT want another gutless pickup.
I know a lot of you guys have owned both. Any real world comparisons with substance would be appreciated.

I had a 15 supercharged and traded in for a 17 OR 4x4. I miss the power but I still like my 17 more after 8 months. I agree on how solid the late 2nd gens are but the 3rds are still Toyotas and with the 18's coming soon I'm sure they have made improvements on known issues. I haven't had any trouble out of my 17 and it just turned 10K.

From a former tundra owner that has had both 2nd gen and now a 3rd gen, if you are coming from a tundra both 2nd gen and 3rd gen will seem gutless. If you are worried about guts then stick with your tundra.

edit: My tundra was the 5.7 so I cant speak of the 4.6 tundra guts in comparison.

I love my manual trans, from what I read the 2nd gens have better auto. You need to drive the 3rd gen to decide if your ok with how it likes to be driven.

my dad tells me i should have bought a dodge after he drove my tacoma.
he owns a dodge 3500 and pulls a 16 ft enclosed trailer everyday.. so after he got in my tacoma he was very disappointed haha

4.6 is pretty gutless b/c of the gearing; 3.91 rear end
    I had a 07 5.7=NOT Gutless

2nd gen, no question IMO. I wish I'd bought a 15. I would have saved money and probably would be far more satisfied how it drives.

If you take away the "new" gadgets of the 3rd gen the 2nd gen would probably win in a lot of people's mind.

I had a 15 for a couple years. Everyone always talks about the teething issues of the 3rd gen, I guess I was dealing with the wisdom teeth of the 2nd gen. My 15 made more grinds, pops, and kazoo noises then my 3rd gen. Granted I've only had my 3rd gen for a few months so the jury is still out but my 15 2nd gen saw its fair share of dealer time.

Honestly get whatever you think you're gonna be happier with.

There's people all over the spectrum for the 3rd gen. Some people are extremely happy with zero issues and some have countless issues. I've also seen people report fantastic mpgs as well horrible mpgs.

I don't think either truck is "gutless." They are mid-sized trucks. The power is adequate for what they are. However with that said I do believe the 2nd gen is more "torquey" and will "throw you back in the seat" more than the 3rd gen.

Well the power in my Tundra is adequate. But torque is what matters in pickup trucks, especially low rpm torque. That's why diesels are so good. Honestly I'm also considering a diesel Colorado/canyon. But the GMs are really expensive for what you get. You're reaching into used Tundra 1794/Platinum territory there.

If you're looking for power/torque and you go to a Tacoma I think you're gonna be disappointed.

Just don't get an auto 3rd Gen. I was very disappointed. If I could have found a 2nd gen for a lot cheaper I would have went with it. Figured for a few thousand more I could get a brand new one so I did in manual.

i have had a 2nd Gen and on my second 3rd Gen the second Gen did feel like it had a little more tork pulling my boat and utility trailer but I like the 3rd Gen more and with the ECT button on it makes up for it and has plenty of power when I'm pulling my trailers
