I have a set of black 4Runner TRD Pro wheels. Had them about a year. I get my tires, balance, rotation, alignment done at a tire shop I've gone too for years. I know the manager well.
Long story short whoever used the air gun this past time rotating the tires damaged one wheel pretty bad, two others have some scratching I can touch up and live with. The one wheel has a gouge and the powdercoat stripped off the inside of the lug nut space. None of the damage is super visible or deep enough where is if was repowdercoated youd be able to tell.

Problem is I don't think powdercoating can be repaired can it? The whole wheel would have to be redone correct?

I'm going to see what they will do to fix the damage but I want to make sure I'm a little educated on this so I can fight for the right fix. I don't want to send this wheel off to be recoated and its a different color than the others. I'm mostly concerned about rusting and the asthetics of the repair.

They could also probably buy a new wheel for the cost of a repair, I might suggest that.

    What would you do?

Connor, I would try to talk them into buying you a new wheel. If your wheel was in great condition to start off with, you'll have a good case. Let them know that there's always a chance that the repair might not meet your expectations. If this happens, you'd want a whole new wheel. Once they hear this, they'll most likely just buy you a new replacement wheel. Good luck!

Btw, those wheels are painted, no powder coated.

I lost track thousands of dollars ago.
No not all powder is repairable. Thermoset powder what most are things are coated with is not repairable. The powder I was referring to in that quote is a thermoplastic powder. It has no cure cycle and can be reheated for repairs. Thermoset powder are not.

He's going to get me new wheels. He attempted to send one out to be redone and they can't match the matte black. It looks like a gloss dark grey.

Doesn't look bad but definitely not original.
