Was thinking about replacing my 2010 2nd gen for a new 2017 4x4 TRD...

So you're assuming the new Frontier and Ranger will be 100% problem free? No new vehicle is without issues of some sort. I have a recent build Tacoma with no problems or issues, and no recalls or TSB's. Couldn't be happier. I know about problems with send gen's having owned a 2005 for 8 years. It was still a great truck that got top dollar when I sold it. Good luck with those other brands.

The problem is you came here and started reading about the problems. I didn't realize I had any problems until the recall happened (which is standard for just about any vehicle at some point) and I had my 3rd gen taken away from me by the dealership. I came here to get updates and I ran into a bunch of threads talking about problems I didn't know existed.

This place will make you think Tacomas are the worst vehicles in the world, whereas most other sources tell you anything but that.

Replaced leaf springs and gas pedal cut....#tacomaproblems. Go buy a Chevy and you'll see what real problems are like. That should put things in perspective.

No trolling here. I owned a 2007 tacoma, and I traded it in for a 2017 TRD OR.

I had zero issues with my Tacoma. Otherwise, you would have seen me on this forum asking about how to fix something. The 2007 Tacoma was the most reliable car I have ever owned. I am really shocked to see that everyone had all these issues.

So what's up with all the disparaging remarks about Toyota and all the glowing crap for the competition? That's what I meant by troll.

"Everyone" does not have these or any issues. Only a very vocal small minority. Don't get caught up in the hype dude.

I am getting burned by the turd gen. Everyone is. I am hopeful that Toyota has a fix.

But, I am definitely seeing the appeal of other makes and models now.

Before I would have been Toyota only, but not any more.

I've had my 2017 Tacoma now for a little over 2 months. I've had 0 issues with it. Other than the funky shifting it's been solid. This forum on third gens is almost as bad as the e90 forums on the n54 platform.

Hearing people avoid the 3rd gen gives me mixed feelings.

I hope that means Toyota will feel it. If enough people make this decision, that might expedite some fixes.

But, this might hurt the resale value if it gets a bad reputation (which, unfortunately, I think it deserves).

I won't recommend one until they fix my diff howl. Guy in my building, with a 2nd gen, asked me how I liked my 3rd gen. I had to break him the bad news and explained my experience and what to look out for.

I just saw a new Tundra in his spot.

Ford, GM and Nissan see what is happening on these forums and Reddit. The automakers have people that read all the online communities. The so-called "leaks" of the Ranger and the Frontier were probably leaked by them to start stirring up hype.

There is going to be a massive trade-in of 3rd gens and it's going to kill the resell value of all Tacomas not just the 3rd gen. Sell it while you can.

    No I don't.

I was all set to purchase one and drove 5 different 3rd gens (2 2016 models and 3 2017 models)

TBH, if I hadn't driven the 2016 models pre-TSB I probably wouldn't have noticed it as bad in the 2017 models, but I was already sensitive to it.

I kept waiting for Toyota to fix the shifting issues with the 3rd gen and EVERY one I drove shifted gears like my wife picking a restaurant.

The leaking rear differentials sealed the deal for me and Toyota lost me as a potential buyer.

    So I quit waiting.

I drove the Frontier and it shifted like it was supposed to and had plenty of low end power.

I almost bought the Frontier but ending up just keeping my old Super Duty and buying something else.

I didn't disparage the 3rd gen in my post, I just pointed out other options as the OP pretty much had apparently already written off the truck.

I have said before, it's not so much the issues, it's Toyota's lack of response to the issues that finally steered me away.

    But you're right.

I don't need to be adding fuel to the fire as I don't have a dog in this fight.

I will stay in lurk mode in the Gen 3 area :anonymous:

You don't speak for anyone except yourself. Don't say everyone because the truth is very few have any issues at all. You just stated in a previous post where you have had no issues except where the max torque is located on the curve. Also there is no "powerband" as this is not a two stroke Suzuki RM 250.
Now about that torque you are missing... I have a manual transmission as well. Been driving them since I was 15 or about 39 years now. The torque is there and it is very easy to locate. Instead of shifting at 2500 RPM ( which is what I know you are doing it's called short shifting) start shifting at 3000-4000 rpm range. That's where the torque is. It won't hurt it as it was designed to shift in that range.

    ^ This.

Exactly what I plan on doing. My 2010 still has a few years on it. I'll wait and see what Nissan and Ford has to offer before deciding to buy my next truck (be that Toyota, Nissan...or...blech....Ford)
