Synthetic Oil yes or no

I use Mobil1 5w-30 and a Purolator Pure1 filter. The oil can be bought in a 5 qt jug at Walmart for $23-27 depending on if its on sale, and the filter is about $5. So roughly $30 for a full synthetic oil change. It's so easy to do on these trucks (no ramps needed, filter on top, etc) that I am more than happy to do it myself.

I've torn into engines of mine at over 100k and they look clean enough to eat off of. To be fair, that probably has more to do with consistent oil changes and not the brand of oil though.

 

I buy M1 5w-30 at costco and oem filters.

Funny you say it'll cause leaks wheN in turn one of the reasons it's designed for is to stop small leaks.

 

Those of you using 5W-30, what does your engine call for? The 2.7L 2TRFE has called for 5w-30, 5W-20, and 0W-20 all in the same generation. I run 0W-20 since thats what the cap says but should I be running something else?

 

Also interested in some info about this question. Is it the VVTI? Or is it some crap for CAFE standards? If it is the latter I would be inclined to switch grades once my warranty is up.

 

Personally I run 0W-20, but as my engine gets older I may run 5w-20...it still has the same operating temperature as what I run but still a bit thicker. That being said in Chicago where I live we have had -25F days during the winter....those are the days I'm glad I'm running a 0W-20.

 

I run Mobil 1 5w30 and Wix filters. I have used that combo for years on all my vehicles with no issues, so I will stick with what works for me.

As for leaking after switching at a high mileage, I bought a Ram 5.7 with 187,000 miles on it. The previous owner had run Quaker State dino oil since new. I switched to M1 high mileage at 189,000 with no leaks and no issues. It had 207,000 when I traded it in on my Tacoma.

 

actually the new T6 rotella is a multi-vehicle 5w-30 synthetic oil. I don't run it but have considered it.

As for gear oil...

The folks at ECGS that make our replacement bearing for OEM needle bearing recommend non synthetic for gears. They recommend

ah didn't know they came out with 5-30. we only had the 15w40 at our shops so that's what I thought he was referring to.

 

I think its funny that people treat amsoil like its some protected class. How do you start a joke about amsoil? (Glances over both shoulders...)

 

Amsoil + OEM Filter.

 

Have been running Amsoil signature series and their EA oil filters for a decade in my truck. I use regular analysis to monitor wear and oil life. Have settled into an 18 month change interval ~ 4-8k miles. (Not my daily driver)

Use the same stuff in my wife's car and hers goes 18k miles ~12 months per change.
Wear elements have always been well below universal averages in both motors despite the long time/distance runs. Amsoil was the first company to bring API synthetic automotive oils to market and I will never use anything else.

 

That sounds like a kick-ass job!

“With its superior resistance to deterioration, AAA’s findings indicate that synthetic oil is particularly beneficial to newer vehicles with turbo-charged engines and for vehicles that frequently drive in stop-and-go traffic, tow heavy loads or operate in extreme hot or cold conditions.”

But you aren't going to put yourself in the poorhouse if you flip for the synthetic, either: these oils add an average of only $64 per year to vehicle operation costs, a bit less than twice as much as conventional oil.

 

Don't get me wrong Amsoil is good. Used to use it myself in my 3.4L. I have to laugh when people say it's the holy grail of oils.
