Can someone tell me if this is normal if I turn the wheel on my 2016 trd sport while not moving or going slow the engine drops below 500rpm kinda pukes then revs over 1000 rpm.. This causes surges in the drive through etc... Anyone else have this.?

If you're at basically idle or parked then yes. Has to do with the power steering system. Mine does the same thing. These trucks idle fairly low so pretty much anything that needs the slightest bit of engine power will make it rev up. Steering, AC system, going over a leaf on the road, etc.

Yup normal. Power for the power steering.

EDIT: I just reread your post and that is more extreme than mine. Mine idles at around 600 and when I turn the wheel it moves to maybe 700-750 and only during the wheel turn.

So its not just me. I notice this when trying to park in tight places. The rpm will hang. I wait for it to come down before letting go of the clutch. Otherwise, lurch forward much more than expected with my foot completely off the gas pedal.

I have the same RPM fluctuations.
Will actually surge the vehicle when at slow speeds.
Dealer says "normal" for this truck as the power steering pump demands additional rpm's for operation.
    It is annoying as hell..

    I might see a 200 RPM increase.

Going from sub 500 to over 1k isn't something I've ever experienced at idle or low speed. I don't see 1k RPM at idle or low speed ever, except on cold starts in 20-30 degree mornings.

500+ RPM surging under power steering load is not normal, IMO.

    What?

I was in the McD's Drive-through and had the wheel turned fairly hard and was going very slow. I heard the engine revving and could feel the truck surging while inching forward. I don't buy the line that every car does it, this truck is my 7th vehicle and have driven dozens of other varieties and I've never actually noticed revving due to power steering load like that.

To be clear, this is in no way a deal breaker for me and tolerable, its just a strange quirk.

Was looking for a posting for this already, glad others don't like it. It's a pain backing in or out of the garage because of this, not to mention hooking up to a trailer. I think they ramp the rpms up too high for just turning the wheel slightly.

Out of curiosity, what's the longest you've idled for?

Car-sized 3.5L engine (which also runs in low compression Atkinson cycle at idle) trying to steer truck-sized tires.

My 2nd gen does it too, but only a 100-200 rpm surge.

We just purchased a 2017 TRD same problems as all of you are posting . To us it's a Undesirable characteristic of this truck. We also experienced while on a hill, when foot was on break break was released and foot went to gas pedal, truck rolled back slightly we heard a very unusual grinding noise has anybody else experienced this . We went back to the same hell we try to duplicate the noise and we were unsuccessful. I am assuming that there are no fix for what everyone is posting has anybody had any total fails with this characteristics of this automobile ? I want to add that three days after we purchased the truck, with only 60 miles on the truck, our truck went into the garage. They kept the truck overnight, and they fail to find anything of course. Leaving us with a mystery of what's going on with this automobile which was not cheap.
