It looks way more low-profile than the factory version.

There is nothing low-profile about that cover. Look at the Bak-flip F1 and compare.

I'm about to buy one and I'm wondering, is the factory one as good as the Bak-flips, Mx4 or other aftermarket ones?

I have the bakflip fibremax, which is between the g2 and the hd, and have had no issues with it. Install was easy and i can take it off in less than a minute. Ive also walked on it in sections and had little flex. 210lb.

Seems like there are a lot of good options out there. It's the first time I see Toyota make their own for the Tacomas. I don't think they did before the 3rd gen. Anyway, just wondering if I should negotiate a factory one with the dealer and just bundle it with the truck, vs going aftermarket. Apart from a few installation complaints, I don't really see anybody really complaining about the factory unit. I do need something that can come off relative easily.

I have an Undercover Flex. I love the cover. It does cover the rail system so my cleats are useless.

-- EDIT: I Paid a couple hundered less than the OEM cover. It is low prifile, less than 1/4" above the bedrails if that much. From my understading it is MUCH easier and faster to remove than the OEM. --

I moved from an 04 to the 2017. Essentially, I lost the ability to use something I never had before, so not a big issue for me. It was cheaper than the Fibermax, at the time at least. I have never tried to walk on it so I can not comment on how much it may hold.

I installed the cover alone, spent 15 minutes at the most. I am old slow an meticulous.I have had minor leaking, the bulk of that waws when my truck was parked with the grill uphill, like in my driveway. The water was just under the ends of the rails/gutters. This was caused by the angle not allowing the water to drain out the drain tubes near the cab before overflowing the tailgate end. From the best I could see prior to my purchase the Fibermax might suffer from the same minor design flaw.o_O

I can remove or replace the cover in about 2 minutes, but as mentioned before, I am old and slow.

I have since modded the cover to add a D-ring at each of the 3 bolts securing the rails to the tracks. Now I have 6 anchor points that my '04 never had! I picked them up on sale at Amazon for 1.99 for 4. That worked out to .50 each with a working load of 1,000lbs each. I doubt I have any cargo problems.

If your confusing this for a Non-factory...what exactly do you think is the factory one?

I've heard people complain about the seal and that it leaks water. However I think this is because you need to close the tailgate before closing the cover. I've had mine since day one and have been through car washes, I never see a drop of water in the bed.

I'll admit it would be a lot easier to buy if I just negotiate it at the dealership down to invoice and just bundle it with the purchase. If it's good, then better yet.

I think its great IMO. But I also don't care for the low profile look, honestly either way it doesn't bother me. It's heavy, can be easily removed if you want to transport large items and you can't really damage it unless you really intend to.

The factory unit had different bed rails, and if you ever decide to get rid of the cover your bed rails have pins and notches... its way better to get an aftermarket in my opinion. Retain the non cutup bed rails.

The dealership just gave me a extang solid fold 2.0 when I paid for the hard tonneau cover when purchasing the truck.

The truck I'm looking at comes with the factory Tonneau already not, so there's not a whole lot I can do. But I kinda like it. Eventually I might be doing a camper anyway.
