Thanks for the answers about the ARB fridge. Making a choice between the ARB units which have a very low amp draw, or a compressor fridge with built in freezer compartment. Works like a house unit, but it draws about 3.5 amps, intermittent. ARB is under or around 2 amp, from what I have read.

Indel-B is very similar and or better rated than the ARB while also being cheaper. You dont even need to clip any coupons.

If you're going to Toytec on Saturday, I'm sure there will be plenty of chances to check the many varieties out.

just tossing this out here. Came across some Boondock camping sites that were talking about people converting to "apartment" AC fridges in campers because of the cost savings, weight, easy of maintenance and draw isn't that much more than a DC/ propane (still needs elec to operate).

There are choices with DC too. 3 way fridges use very little propane to operate, but they have to sit level, and they range in temperature with the ambient temp, so constant adjustment. On DC power, they will draw around 12 amps because they use heat transference to operate. My tent trailer had one and it was nice, but had it's share of hazards too. Driving down the road with it on DC produces a fairly large load on the alternator. If it can handle it, that's fine. If running on propane, you better remember to shut it off before you pull in for gas as it's an open flame exposed to the outside air.

The straight DC compressor models will run under 3 amps, intermittent, and come with a useable size freezer bigger than a pack of hot dogs. This is what I'm leaning towards. With a 160 watt solar panel on top, it should extend the use of dual batteries for a couple weeks with an occasional top off using the truck alternator. Plus, being at altitude more often is cooler ambient temps and maybe I'll park in the shade too.

Reason I was asking about ARB is I can do a shell model camper and outfit it myself.
However, if there is no cost or weight savings as well as no performance gains, I may just go with what the manufacturer offers, as it's designed to fit.

Right now it's looking like I'll go with a fully outfitted unit, minus the inside shower and porta potti option. However it will have a 6 gallon heated outside shower.

Any specific manufacturers you are looking at? I have been in Lancers but seem pricey to me.

Also, I think they call them "Casette" toilet might be worth cost if your not getting the built in stuff.

Lance campers are the most popular right now, they are truly luxurious. But to take advantage of them you really need the 8' bed riding on dually's.
Plus the overall height really limits forest travel.

Northstar is another brand that is built really stout and has more luxury to offer than 4wheel pop up does. However that extra luxury comes with more weight and larger overall dimensions. Plus the roof design, I just don't like it. Screams of future leaks.
A guy in my neighborhood has one on a DC 1st gen Tundra and it looks great. But there is a lot overhead. I still drool over it when I go past his house.

The 4wheel pop ups are built really stout and will still allow me to get to remote area's.
Most of my time will be spent outside anyway. I don't need a lot of room to cook, eat and sleep.
