As mentioned make sure you collar condition him first with an ecollar. Learn everything you can about it before you even charge it. And be careful when you use it never use it around birds, etc. If you even think your going to end up with another dog at some point and hunt with a brace recommend you get a 2 dog system now. With vibration. He is young now but at some point when he is older good chance he will not be able to hear you. But you can recall with vibrate.

I've had dogtra collars first one went 12 years and had to replace the battery once. Clip broke on it so ended up getting a dogtra 2 collar system. They both still work. Tri tronics is another brand and was considered top of the line for many years some still feel they are. Sport dog is the new kid on the block and think all 3 are pretty decent. Garmin purchased tri tronics a few years ago and some people are not happy about it but I have had no problems with mine.

2 years ago I purchased a Garmin Alpha which tracks with GPS plus provides estim tone and vibrate. After having one don't think I'd put a dog on the ground without one. Spendy but worth it to me.

First year I want the dog to have fun and learn, without me controlling him the whole time. Many people over handle their dogs IMO. But obedience off leash is priority number one. Don't worry about him working too far you can pull him in later. A lot harder to get a dog to push out further than come in. Safety and recall are my main concerns.

Good luck and hope you both have fun. It takes birds to make a bird dog get him on some birds.

Enough to make it a lot of fun!
Thanks for the advice. The plan is to use it as little as possible. I am just trying rain in some small things and use it for safety near roads and other dangerous areas. Vibrate and tone would be super nice to have.

My dog really really really likes other dogs and has a keen sense of direction. Ever since she learned where other dogs live, the wireless fence no longer holds her back. She literally walks a half a mile or more to look at other dogs. I'm setting up an actual fence tomorrow. Should I consider adopting another dog to keep her company?

    Um.. No.

It depends on the the location, the dog, your experience and his training... But i would HATE having to always leash my boy. If i go somewhere that has rules/laws to use a leash then i will....

Other than that... Proper training makes leashes unnecessary... And as a "responsible human" i made sure my dog was trained and able to enjoy life off of a leash.

I had to get another dog to keep my girl company, it's actually easier, they'll play with each other a lot tire them selfs out plus I mean come on I'm sure they are lonely when they don't have anyone there own kind don't you think

A real fence is a much better solution! Even a regular hot wire works much better than those wireless underground fences.

As far as getting another dog.... 1 is never enough LOL

He is looking good. Watch his weight. Some Greys like to pack weight on. Nothing worse than a fat Greyhound.

Ha! We have been. He gets weighed at the vet each time, and he's been a consistent 83 lbs for the last 3-4 months now.

He is a good size dog then. My boy was about 77# when he got him. His racing weight was 94# iirc. Took a while to get him back there and he eventually was just shy of 100#.received_10155003332091422.jpg

He was one hell of a dog. Great personality, very few bad traits. He was like a pup again when we rescued a border collie mix. They played together for hours. Sadly we lost him to bone cancer before his tenth birthday.

Dogs passing on breaks my heart. I always liked dogs, but once I got one of my own, I now LOVE dogs, and wish they could spend eternity with us. I don't think I'll ever NOT have a greyhound now.

We did that for "murder dog" and it really helped calm her down. When we praise "the snuggler" for positive behavior, the mean one tries harder to mimic it. They play together, eat together, cuddle with each other, and generally support each other. The down side is that they also wind each other up - God help you if one hears something and starts barking, because the other will chime in for morale support.

It's worse when they both decide they want to share a lap. Together they generate enough heat to melt you.

Generally, Lucy has been a much happier dog since Kiki came along. Your results may vary - I think it all depends on who is alpha.

I hope when I die I come back as a dog with a good owner. I've never been that comfy in my entire life.
