255/85 R16 Owners Experience

They do very well once you air down to 20 PSI. Wasn't too deep, if I was out at Glamis I'd probably go down to 15. You may not need to air down if it's a sand mix. YMMV

 

This thread was worth re-reading, especially the parts where "there's no way you can fit 255s on a 3rd gen without at least a cab mount chop!"

 

You run the Toyos right? I'm looking hard at those. Had them on a diesel and loved them

 

Yes running Open Country MTs. Believe it or not still looks like there's room. Supposedly they are the largest of the 255/85/16, but I have not seen others (tire brands) in person.

 

I think I posted when I got the tires but I never updated when I put the new wheels on. Bought these shortly after I put the Maxxis Bighorns on and PCed them gunmetal grey. Had the center caps color matched but they lightened up a little when they cured but it's kinda growing on me. The wheels are 4Runner limited wheels and they fit perfect. No additional trimming required for me from the original fender trimming when I first put the 255's on

 

I like the gunmetal. I went with the older T4R limited wheels PCd black. Painted the center caps and left the centers alone.

 

Those look awesome. Any chance that you have a shot down the side so I can see how the stick out?? You running any spacers?

 

Hopefully this picture helps kinda hard to see with the garage door color but it's pretty even with the fenders. I'm not running any spacers on my setup either

 

Great. Thank you. That's exactly how I want mine to fit. Running 285s now on 16x8 with 4.5" BS. They stick out a little and it looks good, but my truck is getting beat up by rocks and shit thrown by the tires. 255s and wheels like that will somewhat fix it without being totally tucked under.

 

Ok, only a YEAR later, i finally got back to investigating what is rubbing and how bad. Took the wheels off - took the sway bar off - took the coilover out - put the wheel back on. Got the jack under the LCA and jacked the wheel up to various heights and found that indeed, at about 20-30° turn to the left, the driver-side wheel hits the pinch weld - and probably interferes by as much as a 3/16-1/4". (Whoops - probably not so safe to drive) The passenger side wasn't as bad - only interfering by 1/8". ("Only...")

So, next step, I marked the LCA cam positions (rear was maxed outboard on driver side - not a good sign) and then tried adjusting for clearance. With the driver side absolutely maxed forward (max caster, neutral camber) the wheel still slightly hit the pinch weld at full flex. Passenger side had more adjustment, and fully maxed for caster fully cleared the pinchweld - no more rubbing.

I still have to measure where i am on toe. I think i am running about 0° camber on the the passenger side and ~.3-.5° positive camber on the driver side. (Argh). Long story short, i think i will be flattening the pinchweld.

While i was under there I jacked the 5100's up to the second notch. (Everything had settled and was starting to look a little droopy...)

 

Buying new tires in July, and I have been looking at how tall different 255s are. I was leaning towards the ST Maxx, but discovered that there is no height difference between the Cooper 285/70/17 and 255/80/17, they are identical. I know the Toyo mud terrains are taller than most 255 series.

is there a 255 AT tire out there that is taller as well?

I am adding the 29dxl add a leaf to my Dakar pack so I will be close to 3" lift front and rear. Looking to fill out the wheel well with a tall tire.

My 255/80R17 Cooper STMaxxs measured in at 32.5" (give or take) brand new and unloaded, basically measured as soon as they got off the UPS truck. I feel like the filled the wheel wells great. Didn't affect MPG at all, still get 19mpg daily driving over 20+ on the highway. I didn't want to deal with 285s due to trying to fit them in the front and also I knew it would hit the MPG from what others have said.

 

Yes despite toyo website nor anyone else selling toyos not listing the actual height their whole product line does run on the tall side, which is what I am looking for. Anyone know of another AT 255 that is taller than 33"? As for the KO2 34s would be very interested but yikes the price! over 300$/per

 

Finally got my tires on.

DC Extreme Country 255/85-16. Bone stock 2016 SR5 with OR wheels.

This is true but the KM2's are totally worth it. I ran a set of 33x10.5's and went everywhere the rigs with larger more aggressive treads went. on the road they are great for handling for a truck tire. BFG claimed 55k last I looked but only got 49k out of them before going to the BFG MT. I'd go back to the KM2 for my DD in a heart beat.

My mistake, I noticed I wrote KM2 when I should have stated KO2's. The AT's are awesome as are the MT's. I will go back to the AT's after my current tires wear out.

 

I believe you may have confused bfg's All terrain KO2 with the KM2. The KM2 is bfg's MT tire.
