I am glad that worked! I just caught up on this thread tonight. I haven't been on here for several weeks.

I feel very fortunate to have a well running truck. I got 24 mpg on my way to work tonight. 14,000 miles.

What is the calibration ID on your ECU? I think your Carista will show it to you. The newest one ends in 300.

The misfires on decel are very interesting. The ECU should be turning off the injectors so there shouldn't be any fuel in the cylinder at all.

Yes it shows it in Fusion or Carista, will take a look tomorrow. Assume you do have the vibes as well even with your well running truck?

Im guessing that this diode/thermistor was bent back since the beginning....

One thing that I do notice is that this thing looks really greasy. Maybe cleaning the grease/oil film is cleaning the sensor all together and getting a true reading.

yes, mine was bent back like that as well so I can only assume it's intentional in the design. but yes, some muck on there for sure - perhaps assembly oil but who knows.

When I was sitting in traffic at idle a few weeks ago and saw my MAF showing an air flow on par with what you'd see at WOT acceleration I knew I had to do something - and this was the easy fix for THAT problem. :)

Yes. Mine is angled like that too, no need to frig with it lol.

Did you spray the cleaner inside this badboy too?

Ref your first (left hand) pic, I put the straw in the narrow end of the sensor tube and angled it about 45 deg downward. Sprayed until cleaner ran out the narrow slits located about halfway down the sensor.

YES. I sprayed the hell out of every crevice and tube on this thing multiple times just to be sure!

Perhaps.... I tell my wife that I work very hard so we can have nice things (and go cool places), but I buy good stuff that lasts and intent to maintain it and keep it for a long time (boats, bikes, outdoor gear, furniture...whatever). A little OCD comes with the territory if you want to maintain your sh** - but this truck has definitely tested my ability to CONTROL my OCD b/c at least with most things they come out of the box pretty well built. I've bee OCD just trying to get this thing to the starting line....

    Thanks @MOC221_ and @bshammer0.

I thought for a second that I have possibly bent it while I was taking it out.

I gave it a good get with CRC Mass Air Flow Cleaner.
This isn't the first MAF sensor that I clean. This however,
is the first time I clean it on this truck.

I usually clean my sensors when I clean/replace the air filter.

Checked this today, and based on what you indicated it would appear I have the latest calibration ID. Can anyone confirm?FullSizeRender.jpg-2.jpg

That is what I got with the last flash. I don't have any vibrations or differential howl. I don't even have squeaky leaf springs but I do keep them lubricated with fluid film and I retorqued the entire driveline myself.

So I feel very fortunate. Like you I purchased the truck expecting to get at least 10 years of fun and reliable service with just preventive maintenance. Based on all the reports here I am a little skeptical that I can manage that.

Same here - at this point the best I'm hoping for is to drive this one for another year, year.5 and trade it in after the powertrain warranty expires with a 2018-2019 3rd gen with the same body style (hopefully) so all my accessories will transfer over. I've spent a lot of money making this truck do everything I'd ever want to with all the racks, tops, etc., But for today its still running really well post CPS. All I can surmise is that my failing CPS was giving bad data which could have caused some muck to make it's way back into the intake which led me to cleaning my MAF. Definitely helped - I mean I was reading 40+ g/s MAF while idling w/o AC (when it should hover around 3-4 g/s) so my instant thought was the MAF clean. Boom, the truck no longer smelled like rotten eggs and gasoline. I was actually relatively happy with the MAF clean, but had already ordered the CPS. Doing that swap was the biggest AHA moment I've had... my truck wasn't stalling, but it just didn't feel "right," weird shift points aside. EVERYTHING just feels "easy" now from steering to throttle response - even though I do stay in ECT most of the time and my MPGs keep increasing. I just got 21 mpgs heading back home from lunch (short 4 mile trip but lots of stop-and-go).

Will see where this goes - I'm still going to ask for Toyota to look at my consolidated logs on the misfires following acceleration but my suspicion is that since in the field service manual it says 0-35 misfires per cylinder is considered "normal" I'll probably be told the same....

Emailed the company and told them my issues with downloading the 2016 Tacoma add on and they had it fixed in less than 6 hours. There was an issue with iTunes add on downloads but it's been fixed

Making a run to British Columbia next weekend (for a week or so) and thought I'd change air filter and clean the MAF.... Man this one is easy to clean and only takes about 5 minutes....It did not look dirty, but if I get 1 MPG more, that will save money on this 8,000 Km run....

When I cleaned the MAF and throttle body of my 2006 4.0 Taco it was a lot more involved and the T/B was very dirty as I'd used a K&N filter. Big difference felt on my 2006 at that time.....Acceleration was way improved.

I'm in Nova Scotia, and as a general rule I don't get too specific about my location on the interwebs lol. Old habits die hard my friend.

    Cheers,

I couldn't help it... driving to and from the mountains this weekend I continued to feel pretty good about how my truck is driving overall. Still the steering vibes (though less than before) that happen to sit right at 75-80mph interstate speeds.

My truck has never run as well as it did when I first used Pure Gas. My thinking is that if my MAF and CPS were sending bad data before (clearly was the case...), perhaps I can now try to run ethanol free again. And since I never had any data to back up claims around performance, I was interested to see

So after running down my tank to empty, I filled up with some Phillips 66 pure 89 gas.

    Initial results:
-i had one single misfire the first short trip after fill-up, as it was adjusting to the new fuel... this was an occurrence that had been happening 4-7 times on average for a ~15 mile trip before.
-not ONE single misfire recorded in the subsequent 7 trips totaling about 100 miles
-of course, it purrs without ethanol in it. chirps don't happen at all. Even the injector cleaning clicks are not as loud.

So, we have a truck that many with religiously defend was DESIGNED to run on regular 87 with ethanol from the pump. (Agree this SHOULD be the case). However... it will misfire and sound like rats eating crickets.

Anyhow, more of a test than anything. I have pretty easy access to Efree but stayed away from it due to some prior issues I had which were likely due to the truck not being able to correct the timing for the fuel when receiving bad data from the CPS and MAF.

We shall see if it sticks... and if it doesn't it will be interesting to see what happens with the data.
