    Hi all

I am new to the site but not to tacomas. I had a 2001 until buying my 2016 used with 13000 on it.
I have a popping noise coming from the intake.l when turning the wheel.
I have a after market k&n cold air intake on it. I am fairly certain this noise was happening prior to the cold air swap out and now the dealer says they wont even touch it woth out the original air filter system.
Has anyone else had this issue or is the dealer jsut trying to get out of a warrenty issue on a technicality?
Any info would be greatly appreciated
    Thank you!

Can you get the noise on video? Popping noises from the intake is both an uncommon thing as well as vague. If you can film it I am pretty sure we can track it down.

There have been other threads about this happening when the weather is below freezing and there has been frozen precipitation recently. As far as I'm aware, there has been no resolve and it goes away when the weather warms up.

^^^ Admittedly, my truck makes a lot of popping noises when there is frozen precip all up underneath. That could be the case here.

I live in NC and the wheather has been pretty moderate so far. This has been happening no matter what the temp is. I am trying to attach a video i took on my samsug phone but it wont let me upload it. its only a 30 second clip. Does this forum allow this and if so how would i go about posting for you all hear?

Could it be the power steering? That is what I thought it was..I found it more noticeable with my intake installed. This only happens when stationary or slowly moving in parking lot, correct?

Yes exactly. Mostly stationary or very low speed.
Its like the power stearing causeing the idle rpms to jump causing a small pop in the manifold or the cold air kit somewhere. I thought it might have been the metal cover on the air filter flexing at first but that wasnt the case.
I tried to create a you tube account so you can see what im talking about. You can hear it mostly in the the 20 to 30 second mark of the video.

Easy answer. Put your original equipment back on. If the noise goes away, it's related to the CAI. If it is still there, then go into the dealership so they can figure it out. You can't expect them to find and fix a noise under warranty if you introduced it.

I understand thats what i will have to do. I was just wondering if anyone else had run into this issue with this type of kit and if there was a reason for it before i go yanking it out and putting the old one back on since im fairly certain this was happening before i installed this. i dont think K&N would release a product that causes this kind of issue. If they did i would think alot more people would have run into the same issue after install but i dont see much about it anywhere online.
I should have take back right away but figured i would wait for the 20000 mile mait since it really isnt that bad but now it just anoyes me. Bad move i guess.
I will post an update after the swap out and dealer inspection.
Thanks again for all the feed back!

    Spitballin' here...
The K&N lacks a air resonance chamber; perhaps what you are hearing is a pressure wave pulse.

YES SIR! I've had this problem for a while now. I live in Florida and it makes the pop noise no matter what temp or what time of the day.

But the weird thing is it only does it once I start the car and turn the wheel. After that it won't pop until I turn the truck off and start it back up 5 minutes later.

I have a 17 DCOR. Just installed the cold air intake. The popinf sound you hear is normal and it was there on the original intake as well. You just didn't notice it because it was muted. I did notice it from the day I bought the truck and it was a little annoying.

When you turn the steering wheel it make the engine work just a tad harder to drive the power steering belt. I also heard it while hooking up my boat. That blurp was from the fan motor. It all causes the motor to draw in more air.

I have been researching the K&N cold air for weeks and the haters outnumber the believers 10:1. I just drove 5 miles with it installed and the performance IMO is amazing. No more bogging at slow speeds. Torque curve is more straight. The sound is also very nice. I'll be towing a boat 150miles this weekend. I'm happy to update you guys on my findings.

Popping when turning the wheel was a CV boot for me.

Agreed but this is when the power steering pump makes the engine surge a tad. I know this is an old thread but it's normal with these k&ns. You hear the pulse of it sucking air in. Another method to confirm is let your truck idle but turn the ac on. Just sit there and when the compressor kicks on it causes the engine to surge a tad and you hear it the too.

Just curious op but where in NC? I had a 2016 blue with the intake that I traded in a few months back. It had 23k miles on it I believe. Got another now but this one is a manual instead of auto.

@Irishprik you're good. Totally normal with an aftermarket intake. Best thing to do is regular engine oil changes with quality synthetic oil. Shaeffers is undoubtedly the best oil around according to Dyno testing and wear analysis on engines using shaeffers vs others but any full synthetic will do. Alternatively, could look into swapping out the crank driven engine fan for an electric engine fan to take some accessories off the crank. Could free up several hp from the drag that fan creates on the system, after all it's a pretty big fan. Just some ideas but quality oil definitely helps with the idle quality on this truck, it seems in my experience to be particularly sensitive to bad oil being that it's designed to run on 0w20 oil
