No one is complaining about the top end of the truck. Everyone bitches about how weak it is at low rpms. But yes, so far there is no real solution to this truck aside from regearing until someone develops forced induction for this truck, which will be hard considering we have the pseudo-atkinsons' cycle motor.

The most promising mod for hp seems to be the Y pipe, but I have yet to see an independent dyno for it.

Yup, the second time! The first one fell out the first day. aFe sent me a replacement under warranty. Since then I've added the scoop so no more loose plug issues.

IMG_0962.jpg IMG_0961.jpg IMG_0964.jpg Installed the aFe Momentum GT performance package a few weeks ago and have to say that I have been pleasantly surprised by the increased throttle response and slight performance increases. The kit came with the performance air intake, the air scoop, and billet aluminum helix throttle body spacer.

I really wish someone with a stock naturally aspirated engine would dyno before and after installing one of these damn things so that this debate can finally be put to rest.

What would be nifty is if someone with free access to a dyno did this with any many intakes as possible, e.g. aFe, Volant, URD, K&N, dryer duct.

I completely agree with you. I previously owned a manual Scion tC and when I installed the intake/exhaust, my shifting skill improved immediately because I could hear what my engine was doing. I recently purchased a manual Tacoma and am still having a little difficulty honing in on the perfect gear changes. I am in the market for a K&N CA Intake for the improved engine sound and to help me get better gear changes.

nothing will help your shifting (throttle control) as much as the OV tune. believe me.

    Funny stuff.

One of the advanced performance driving schools I attended has students use earplugs, and we are already wearing helmets.

Because they don't want you to rely on sounds but to 'feel' the car and use the instruments.

And if you ever ran open exhaust in competition (like drag racing) it's quite easy to not know if you are hearing your car or your competitor, when both are lumpy loud motors.

totally agree with this, and pretty much all my cars end up with solid or delalum bushings for that. but for my Tacoma on rubber bushings sound is the best option. as i wear out parts I'll head in the "more NVH is better" direction, as usual.

I can see both sides of this story. By wearing ear plugs you limit your senses and are forced to adapt which can definitely be a good thing. On the other hand by using sound (along with feel and sensors) you can get more in-tune with your car in all aspects.

In my situation I was just doing daily driving and didn't really have noise competition with the adjacent cars. I was able to get better at gear changes faster which meant I spent less time grinding my gearbox to mush. After I got better at rev matching and down shifting, the sound of the engine became less important to me.

If you like it, you like it. I bought a TRD Pro grill, and side marker overlays for my 3rd gen.. zero functionality. Absolutely none. But it looks cool to me. Just like the rest of the guys on TW. Majority of the guys on here buy parts cuz of either functionality or because they want to walk out to their truck everyday and enjoy what they built. Some people even just buy the biggest “coolest” stuff bcuz they want everyone to look at THEM and they wanna be “cool”. Well if a CAI makes u happy, but doesn’t add hp, but u like the sound .. awesome. I have yet to see a true dyno of this specific cai. Seems to me like anyone can talk about how intakes don’t add hp but... show me... proof is in the pudding...:hattip:
