Why not? Any reason other than cost?

    Cost and availability

IIRC , they used a lot of old growth redwood for framing lumber through the 30's-40's in California because of availability and proximity

Just bought my first home last month.

    4 bed, 2.5 bath, 2200 sqft, built in 1977.

Thankfully the house was flipped by a real estate company that flips investment property's. I won't have too many things to worry about on the interior.

First project is a fence and driveway gate. I spent the last two weekends building 70 ft of fence. Today I started on my gate. I should have it finished by end of day tomorrow.

So basically, once i measure to find the correct point, drill up where the arrow points, and i should be in the cavity where i drilled for the box in the earlier pic? I think i will need a 3/4" hole to pull up two coaxial and one ethernet cable.

Correct you should be in the stud bay. Make sure you seal the hole to keep the bugs out.

A tip for you: get someone to shine a light down that hole you cut in the wall. That way when you drill up from the bottom you can tell you're in the right place and you don't have to crawl out to check.

In many ways, new constructions sucks. All the finishings are up to the buyer: window treatments, storage, drawer hardware, back yard (Completely and entirely unfinished), etc. At the same time, the modern amenities are nice: prewired for fans, surround sound, TV tech, well insulated, warranty, everything brand new, etc.

When AT&T showed up for internet, they told me there was no connection and I had to contact the builder to wire it in. I had to show him where it was...inside the communications box underneath the fuses...where it was clearly and obviously wired in and marked. Other than that, it was a breeze.

So we are likely going to install vinyl siding on our house. I have 2 questions.
Does anyone know how to remove this trim around these Pella Windows?

The windows are 5" away from the windows, siding corners just don't seem to fit properly. I was thinking about making my own corners from vinyl plank, but the j channel is 3/4 and the trim on the window is only 3/8 tall (sticking out from the current wood siding)

    Any suggestions?

Some Pella trim snaps in place into the frame. Can you wiggle the trim to check?

I tried to pry it off but it's going to bend/break before it comes off.

An old trick I learned from an electrician years ago..... To find your location the basement (or anywhere), chuck an insulation rod into a drill and drill it down into the basement and see where you end up. The nice thing about it is that if you're in the wrong area (joist in the way), you've only made a less than 1/8" hole. Move over and drill again if need be.

Congrats on the purchase! That looks like a gorgeous home. Love the oak tree in the front yard.

Unfortunately, I couldn't get the fan into the master bedroom. Opened the box and there was a huge notice that it does not work with variable speed wall controls or dimmers, and you MUST use their remote. I prefer wall controls, because a remote can be lost...plus it's already wired. Boxed it back up, back to the store it goes.

Mounted the 70 inch TV downstairs, and moved the 50 inch up to the loft/media room, which will get up on the wall once I buy a mount for that too. Installing a TV mount proved to be much easier this time around with an impact driver lol.

70 inch TV fits the space exactly, with no overhang into the alcove and still centered. Once we have an entertainment console of sorts for that alcove, the wiring can all be hidden behind the wall (already set up for it).

My GoogleFu has been exhausted so I thought I would ask here. I'm installing a shallow cabinet in my bathroom. I've built the wall out a bit (see pics) and the cabinet will slide in.

I'd like to install a surface mount electrical box in the cabinet (hope to keep all the GF's clutter off the counter top). I'd like to surface mount the box in the cabinet, over the hole in the frame and run the wires directly into the back of the box. This will save me from having to run armored cable into the cabinet and up the inside.

I've seen pictures of a SM box with no apparent external cable, but can't find any specific documentation on it. Anybody have thoughts or suggestions?

    Example of surface mount box
