I've done a mod or two
I can't bring myself to mess with the 80 though, it's in much better condition than my newer taco ever was haha.

Well my friend found this company that started in Australia and has just now come to the US. A lot like the slinky coils I think but if I can get this flex out of a radius arm setup, why would I 3 link? @Box Rocket have you heard of Dobinson springs?

Not too shabby! I once parked the Taco with one tire up on a curb. Pretty much the same effect.

Be interested to hear what they're doing with the radius arms to eliminate bind. Can't wait to see this baby on the trails!

Howdy! Alex shot me a message bc you were enquiring about Dobinsons Springs. I'm a Dobinsons dealer based out of Houston, and run one of their remote resi setups on my GX.

Their progressive springs are flexy as hell, I know of a 4runner in NC running a pair, and a couple 80s that just ran the red clay rally as well. I'll try and drum up some pics and get them posted.

Thats insane! I just got a message back from the owner of that 80 and he said with the stock arms they would bind and hardly get any flex, but with super flex arms made by superior engineering you get this!

What size shocks do they offer? 2.0 or 2.5"? And how do you like the ride quality?

Yeah, get those aftermarket radius arms and Put limit straps on it so the coil doesn't come out and should be good.

They've got their twin tube gas shocks, and the MRR's. My monotubes measured out to be 2.2 inches on the outer body with calipers. The ride quality has been awesome, i'm actually about to pilot the progressives in my GX so we can get some more accurate data on what lift they generate.

I'll get some more info on the 80 stuff up in here, in the meantime here's some progressive pics for you.

That's awesome. If you could get me the extended and compressed lengths of the front and rear shocks that would help me a lot.
This would save me a few weeks of fabrication and get me wheeling sooner..

No doubt! What kind of front/rear weight are you expecting? Bumpers, winches, tent, etc?

Tube rear bumper, sliders after I rocker chop it, and a stubby front bumper with a 10k warn winch in it. I have a set of drawers in the back but that pretty much weighs the same as the rear seats did so not gaining much there.
    No RTT on this one.

yes I've heard of them. Dobinson makes springs for a lot of different brands but their own springs don't have the best reputation from everything I've heard and read, as well as hearing it directly from a number of Aussies. Lots of broken coils. Some Australian shops reporting 100% warranty return rate on the Dobinson coils. They have a similar design to the Slinky springs but they don't use the same manufacturing process on them so the quality just isn't there. They're kinda the "Tough Country" suspension of Australia from what I gather.

Also, those pics are cool for a ramp queen. You'll notice the drooped coil has dropped free of the coil buckets. That means essentially zero traction from that tire. Looks great on a ramp but in the real world it sucks.

From all of my research, and in speaking with some Australians myself i've heard a completely different story.

Here's the patrol in the second ramp pic above, his footage starts at about 2:10

I have no doubt there are good reviews on them too. There are definitely a lot of them being used in Australia so there is bound to be some that like them fine. I have just heard enough complaints in my own research and from owning and wheeling an 80 series for nearly 20 years that they weren't the choice for me. I think there are better options out there.
