Having had both Gen 2 and Gen 3 Tacoma DCSBs I found that they seem to be interchangeable regarding the boards/bars, etc. Has anyone else found this to be true? The manufacturers I think don't want owners to know this so they can keep prices higher or prevent them from buying used. Anyone had a similar experience?

They're not the same, slightly different. They probably bolt up, but won't sit flush and could get damaged or your truck could get damaged when you take a hit.

My SOS Concepts sliders have a spacer for the 2016/17 version. I think the bolt holes and fit are more or less the same other than the spacer.
