Just took delivery of 2017 TRD Pro.. first impressions

@JayRolla If you go read the OVtune thread, apparently the throttle plate almost never (if ever) approaches WOT. Toyota is using "torque targeting" to determine how much throttle you get regardless of how much you press the pedal..... reading the OP's posts, I'm actually optimistic that he might really be able to change the driving experience.

 

The computer controls how much the throttle plate opens. That would explain your experience.

 

I don't really see much change since I bought it and I'm about to hit 27,000. This truck ain't perfect. I really like it overall, but it ain't perfect.

 

Since putting on heavier tires I tend to use ECT more. City mileage about the same or a little worse, power is considerably, considerably better. Like a different truck.

However, and this is the odd part, highway mileage is up a good bit since using ECT on highway with heavier tires. And yes, in ECT, I have hit 6th gear, and it will even sometimes hold on the slight grades. To give you an example from 1 week to the next (have owned truck since August now)...

1 week I drove 30 mile commutes on the interstate each day with ECT OFF and truck in D. Averaged 17.6 MPG
Next week I drove same commute with ECT on, truck in D, and being gentle on the touchier throttle that ECT gives - 20.1MPG

That's a massive difference, and I can't really account for it properly. I know that on the days I drove in ECT ON, I was very conscious of my gas pedal usage, but even being gentle, it's so much better to drive. I drove the same speeds each week, and the same way (usually just do speed limit of 75 and draft semi's at a distance when I can...I don't target it).

Even if the MPG were the same, the driving experience with the ECT on is so much better it's like a different truck.

I ordered the parts for the ECT on all the time mod and I'll be adding a kill switch to it when I bring it into the dealership to make it revert to stock behavior.

I can't really justify spending the money on the OVTune since ECT makes me happy, but I can certainly understand why people are interested in it.

 

Is the tire just heavier or is it taller?

 

Mainly just heavier. I went with 265/75/r16 (vs 265/70/r17) Load E - Falken Wildpeak AT3/W

Oh, and yes, factoring in the speed error, but it's only 3.3%

 

What is the weight difference between the wheels?

 

every pound heavier tire than the OEM stock equals 10 pounds of unsprung weight

Approx 14 lbs per tire.

I was told 6 lbs, but either way, yep, it makes a big difference.

Keep in mind I am not complaining about the MPG, in fact, I find 20MPG on the highway with a 2" lift and e Load tires is really good.

I was just stating I think it's crazy that I get better MPG with ECT on. I suspect the VVT-i and Atkison cycle systems push the vehicle to the point where it's underpowered for the heavier tires. That's the only thing that comes close to explaining why more power = better econ.

That, or with full throttle control (or more responsible TC at least) I can manage the hills and such more gently. The vehicle doesn't know if it's coming up on a hill, so it just blasts into it, realizes it needs more power, and shifts.
