This is awesome. I'm going to be out in this area in June. I'm driving with my gf from Florida to near Tombstone, AZ to drive the Arizona Backcountry Discovery Route http://ridebdr.com/AZBDR

It starts near the Mexico border and goes all the way up to Utah, pretty much all dirt. It's just one of the BDRs created by dual-sport motorcycle guys. They say it's all doable in a 4x4 with the exception of some severely washed out sections from a rough winter.

There's a route for Utah as well. If you click the link you'll see all the different states they've made routes for. The GPX files are free to download from the site. Pretty cool, I think. Especially for someone like me who lives so far away and can't really plan a route like that myself.

Anyway, I'm planning to go to Zion and Bryce after the Grand Canyon. Some of these roads from the SU Traverse will be a great way to get me east where I want to eventually camp at Monument Valley.

I for sure want to do the Barracks Road with all the river crossings, just a little worried about being by ourselves and getting stuck.

Who wants to give me their cell # in case I do? lol

OK, meetup point is about 7 hours from me... I am IN!!!!!! Is anyone taking a trailer? I have my 05 Tacoma, 96 Landcruiser, and 14 Turtleback Trailer... All have RTT's. I think I'll take the Taco (2wd) but it has a locker as well as winch up front. It also has the Fridge so its the preferred overlander. If the GF decides to go, I'd want to take the trailer as it has stove, shower, etc.

As far as mileage, we just finished 1500 miles in 5 days. No hotels, did some good sight seeing, and a dozen or so miles of hiking.

    How many trucks so far?

With only 6 or so trucks... EASY PEASY!!!! Air down to 15 + or - a few, and roll out bitches!!!! I have OBA and CO2 as well. We can fill all pretty quick for those who don't have air up capabilities.

I guess it would make sense.

100 miles a day - if people drove at 30 miles per hour, the 100 miles would be covered in 3 hours.

I know 30 miles per hour is too slow, just an example.

30 - 40 is perfect, depending on the dust.

Holy Shitttt!!!! I am currently planning virtually the same trip and i just stumbled across this! Originally was doing this mid July but realized I didn't have the TOB hours yet so am planning to do it in mid August. I would totally sign up if it weren't already all fulled up. Been ordering equipment like crazy for the last month or so. Picking up sliders this Saturday and waiting on bed bars and RTT to come in. We will probably use your route to map our trip. Ha!

Not going, but some notes from my travels around that area:

    1. Even it September, SoUT is hot as balls.

    2. Quail Creek SP is close to the starting point and is a good place to camp. Has a couple of great MTB trails around it too.

    3. Escobar's in Kanab has some amazing fish tacos.

    4. Buckskin Gultch is amazing. Def through-hike from Wirepass TH to the White House TH if possible (requires a overnight permit). There is a HUGE boulder at the midpoint that would be VERY difficult to get up. Also, drive a vehicle or 2 ALL the way up the White House road as the walk back to the paved road is long and exposed.

    5. If hiking Buckskin Gultch, bring way more water than planned. I learned the hard way.

    6. Primitive beach camping is available at Lake Powell for cheap ~$5

I've got an itinerary now and have a couple of guys coming along. We won't be doing the entire SoUT put a portion of it from Bryce Canyon NP to Alstrom point. my wife absolutley LOVES the national Park system and that'll be the main focus of our trip. I've put in for the time off of work from Aug 30 thru Sept 10. Also plan to spend a couple of days in Pagosa Springs so me and the little lady can relax (mostly her) in the hot springs and do the spa thing that women love, ya know.

So, bad news. I will not be able to make this trip anymore. I have some work commitments coming up that I will be busy with until the end of August.

That being said, don't let this stop anybody that is/was planning on going. All I ask is that if you do go take a TON of pics

Well.... That didn't last long. There's a Bonneville race week same period. I'll just switch my attention to that.
