I totally agree. I know it won't happen overnight at the snap of a finger, but there would need to be separation of manual versus AI in some shape or form on the roadways. I guess in that vein (and I've seen this discussed elsewhere numerous times) who is to say you won't have some serious nutjobs purposely hitting AI vehicles just to pin it on the system that they are unsafe?

Really any scenario is a whole can of worms. Which is why when people say driverless cars are in the "near" future, I think they are nuts. Likely won't even see mass institution of them in our lifetime. Probably would just be more along the lines of cargo vehicles like trains using the technology.

This. Self driving cars won't dominate the roadways for some time. The average car's age today is 12 years, so if that trend continues and if only autonomous cars were sold starting today only half the cars on the road in 12 years would be autonomous.

Certain sectors will lead the way, such as trucking, taxi service and probably rentals. There may be financial incentives from your insurance company for purchasing an autonomous car. You may also get an insurance incentive if you install a device in your human driven car that would communicate OBD info with autonomous cars around you so they know when you're accelerating or braking.

I can also see cities designating autonomous-only sectors in high traffic areas, where human driven cars will not be allowed, creating more efficient traffic flow.

Due to autonomous vehicles lots of things will come to be that most of us on TW haven't even thought of yet.

It doesn't have to make sense. What it does is speak to the mindset of the "consumer" -- if it's not accepted, then it doesn't happen.
At least not on the scale that's suggested here...
Someone mentioned horse and buggy, which can still be driven on the street. Motorcycles and bicycles can be driven on the street. What about classic cars? Going to tell someone that their '69 Mustang can't be driven on the street?
Self-driving will be great in some scenarios, but I don't think we'll ever have 100% driverless roadways.

    What a fun truck!
I hope everyone here knows that we have had planes flying themselves (with the exception of take off and landing) for decades. There is a program that allows all planes in the air to communicate effectively enough to avoid mid air collisions. The only time there are mid air collisions now is if a human is flying the plane.

Every airplane on autopilot has a human pilot watching, ready to take over, all the time. Not the same as a driverless car with no one paying attention.

I was talking about the estimated 3/4 second human reaction time to a sudden stimuli while driving.

The self driving car is is this generations flying car. We can't stop planes, trains, ships or submarines from smashing into shit. Will there be "driver aids" yeah sure, but cars and semis that complete drive themselves without issue nope

We have self driving cars. It's called take a bus you idiot. In all honesty. Gps isn't even right half the time. Until they work every bug out of gps systems I don't see how these things can work. I don't see how it can make quick decisions like a driver can. Imagine the self driving car is following somebody with a load of mattresses and not one ratchet strap holding them down( if you live in Houston you have seen this) the mattress goes airbourne and hits the road. A mattress is like a hovercraft when it hits the road going in every direction possible, self driving car freaks out and smashes into 5 other cars surrounding it. In my opinion there are too many variables to have these things mass produced. I mean we still can't even decide between swipe or chip, how the hell are we going to have self driving cars?

Let's make clear the reasons traffic accidents happen (ranked by most to least probable):
    1. Drivers are speeding/reckless.
    2. Drivers are using their phones.
    3. Drivers are distracted (eating, smoking, changing radio stations, etc).
    4. Drivers are tired.
    5. Drivers are impaired (drugs, alcohol, or both).
    6. Honda Ridgelines.

Are there scenarios where accidents are unavoidable? Yes, but they are by far the minority. All of the above, which probably account for 99% of accidents, would be minimized with self-driving cars.

What if Honda makes the self driving odyssey? Oops sorry. "Ridgeline"

As an avid motorcyclist as well as someone who has actually done hands-on work to evaluate the weaknesses of the sensors on current cars, I'm not very thrilled with the idea of self driving cars.

Most of the riders I see deserve to be run over by a self-driving car.

This guy hit the nail on the head. If you're too lazy, stupid, or distracted by diddling yourself and thumb fucking a smartphone - RIDE THE GODDAMNED BUS. My right to travel in a manner of my choosing in whatever mode I desire will not be infringed on by people who want to give away; either knowingly or unknowingly, the he means to execute their own free will and autonomy, and that of others. The city government where I live is actively constructing residential areas where there are no roads, and cars are not allowed. Because cars are an extension of man's violence unleashed upon the world. Because cars are an extension of "privilege". Because Feelz. They can all go fuck themselves and take their self-driving cars with them.
