The small fee is $125 to replace/repair. Because of this fact alone, I don't use my clear water as much as I used to:(

With the 20% coupon they give for the 101 class, the Clearwater saltwater setup drops down from $340 to $270 which seems really good to me

The same shit everyone else has.
I have both a Clearwater combo and an Encounter combo.

My Clearwater is a 9'5w. Its my go to big water trout rod and lake rod. I dont use it a ton since I like chasing gemmies in mountain streams, but I enjoy fishing it when I do use it. It gets used a good bit in the summer for bass and pan fish. As stated above, it loads really easily and is a great beginners set up.

I bought my old lady a 9'5w Encounter combo and Ive fished it a handful of times. The rod fishes just like the Clearwater, Im convinced they use the same blanks. The difference is the warranty, the reel, the Encounter reel is all plastic, and the lock rings on the the reel seat, they arent as nice.

Look around for used gear. Lots of people buy this entry level stuff when they start out, then upgrade and sell it. I picked up the Encounter combo for less than half price used.

Best suggestion I can give you is find someone with some experience who can teach you how to cast. I taught myself and I know I have a buncha bad habits that I cant break.

I got my 2 new 7WT outfits (for my 2018 Alaska trip) all rigged up last night and hit the yard for same casting to try and pair up the rods & reels:

    Rods:
    Ross Essence FC - 9'- 4 piece
    Echo Ion XL - 9'- 4 piece

    Reels:
Lamson Litespeed 3 spooled with Rio Gold WF Floating
Lamson Litespeed 3 spooled with 200g SA Streamer Express sink tip

I cast both reels on both rods - Observations....

I was expecting the stiffer/faster Echo Ion XL to handle/cast the heavier sink tip line line better than the Ross and vice versa with the Ross and the floating line. The opposite was true. I could feel the Ross rod loading much better with the sink tip line (it's more noticeable on any rod anyway due to the weight) and frankly, it cast the heavier line much better than the Echo. The floating line cast fairly similar between the two rods, so that's getting paired up with the Echo. I'm sure this is all a combination of rods, lines and my casting style.

    Thought I'd share.

You should go rub elbows with the employees more :D Over the last few years my buddy and I have had three replaced and one fixed between us. Never paid a cent and got comparable loaner rods each time.

Wow, I didn't think it was that much. I guess that is still better than buying a new rod, and I have heard from people that they have either got rods repaired for free or for a much lower cost than that.

I got my orvis rods at the local orvis store. They told me bring it in if it breaks they would fix for free. I hope they stand by that.

How long ago were you told this. My Orvis dealer told me this year was the 1st year for the co-pay.

I also know G-Loomis now requires a co-pay for rod replacement. Maybe its a regional thing. I dunno?

I guess these leaders and egg patterns aren't going to tie themselves up. Salmon/steelhead season is only three months away. Just waiting for the rest of the chenille to show up.

    LOL

I to go to Joe-Anne's Fabrics. It's an arts and crafts store chain we have around here. I stock up on all my salmon rig supplies.

I just smile to myself. Local bait shop wants $2 for a tiny amount of chinelle. The fabric store will sell you enough for the rest of your life for $2.

Lol. I actually looked at the one store here. They didn't have anything that I liked, most of it was too thick and bushy. Got any pics of what you found there?

No pics and am at work.

I like the place for other items. I get my fake eggs (plastic beads) from there. I like to heat up an egg hook with a lighter then "stick" a plastic, orange bead to the hook. Works great. Just got to be careful to not over heat the hook and lose the temper.

Mini pom poms that look like salmon eggs is another thing I grab. They really are just Victorian fabric trim, you just cut off the pom pom and use them how you want.

You really have to just use your imagination.

10-4. The eggs I tie end up costing like $0.18 a piece.

Try colored hot glue sticks. Can "tie" a fly in about 5 seconds and they look like the real thing too.

I'm not sure they are legal in the fly sections I fish.

I think it would be wise to check your local regs. Some things might not be considered a legal in one state, buy against the law in another.

Hello all, I have never been fly fishing before but have always had an interest and was told to check out the thread so I'll be alternately lurking and asking questions.
