I was changing my spark plugs for the first time on my '06 v6 taco this morning and when re-installing a bolt that holds on a coil, the bolt snapped about half way through the threaded area. Any suggestions on how to get it out and get another bolt?
also thanks chris4x4 for the install instructions.

now how did this happen? that is a pretty minor fastener. how did it break?

is any bit of it sticking out? post up a picture. they make a thin, reverse twist drillbit. since you will need to drill it, may as well drill it backwards. you could get lucky and spin it out.

SEARS is your friend right now.

I was just tightening the bolt down and it snapped. Sorry the pictures are so bad its hard to get in there. Like I said there should be about twice as much thread on the bolt. About one millimeter of the broken part is sticking out. :(

    getting there....
you may need to cover the spark plug hole with a rag and use a very small drill bit on the broken bolt and try an ez out.

1mm isnt alot. i would attack it two ways. do you think it is loose? it isnt bottomed out or under tension...should be loose. unless you xthreaded it, then different problem. if it is loose you can cut a slot in it with a dremel, and back it out with a flat bladescrewdriver.

or drill it and take it out with a screw extractor. at sears, or any decent hardward store.

THIS. Very important to cover the spark plug well.

That is not a good spot to break a bolt. Dry seizing a steel bolt in aluminum is a bitch to remove. First get the coil out of the way and stuff paper towels or a rag in the spark plug hole. If there is any thread sticking out spray it with some penetrating oil and wait for it to soak. Take a steel hammer and give the broken bolt a couple of careful sharp hits. Now take a good pair of vise grips and try to turn the bolt out.
Unless you're really good at drilling stuff out a would recommend finding someone who has experience. If you screw it up it could get expensive.
If you don drill make sure to start small...you can always drill bigger. Good luck and don't forget the "Never Sieze".

The bolt hole for the coil is steel lined. Odds are, he got it cross threaded, and snapped the bolt.

I'v used the flat blade method a few times after breaking a few ez outs. if you go the EZ out method make sure you a get the hole started in the center other wise you might be in trouble, and keep in mind that ez outs are very brittle and easy to break.

If you've never dealt with the ez out and there is enough bolt sticking out at the top to notch out for a flat blade then I'd suggest trying that method first. If you get a hacksaw blade cut down nice and short and get a good line across that bolt you should probably be ok.

1 thing no1 has said is to weld the vise grips to the bolt. as it will be a pain in the arse to get a seized steel bolt out of aluminum. but only do this as a last resort!!

Sounds like you have plenty of options to try. I'd use a piece of tape over the plug hole instead of cramming it full of rags. Also, if you end up going the ez-out route get a center punch to line up that first drill bit in the center of the bolt. Drill slowly and be sure you're drilling it in straight.

yeah I should be able to get it out pretty easy. its just on the driver side so all those hoses are in the way unlike the passenger side. so no suggestions on a replacement bolt?

Take one of the other coil bolts out (without breaking it) and use it to size a new bolt at the auto parts store or local hardware store. Ideally you would go to the dealer and pick up the 'correct' bolt.

Take one of the good ones to your local Ace, True Value, etc. They can probably set you up. If not, off to the dealership!

the stealership would be your best bet on a replacement bolt. yotas use alot of uncommon thread pitchs on there bolts.
