No one's actually given me feedback on my setups. My first setup was a Uniden 505XL with an unmarked mag mount antenna (looks like the Cobra base mount: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005N5X2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_xpBvzbERAMNEQ) and I was able to hear and talk to our group within a couple miles on mountain roads. My current CB, though, might be a different story. Now im running a Midland 75-822 with the same antenna.

This last trip I used it on, it seemed to do fine, but there were a couple of times where the other rig was less than 100 yards LOS from me, and neither of us could understand the other.

I noticed that my SWR is off with the Midland, but it was damn near perfect with the Uniden. Ill bet if I install my dual antennas that I got recently, it should perform better. I should also probably get the radio tuned as well lol

So the uniden with that antenna you linked would be a good one to start with?

Make sure the antenna has a good ground. If it's a magnetic base, check frame grounds on the truck

Can I stay in your spare room and then decide to never leave and not be a functioning member of society and ruin your whole house and steal your dogs until you have to kick me out?

Baaaaaaabe! You guys leave tomorrow! :(

I wish you were staying a little longer... my pup and I are gonna do a solo road trip / camping trip to Crater Lake on Saturday morning.

Honestly, I'd say no. It was "ok" at best. Ya, it worked, but I'm always on a tight budget, and there are much better options out there. If I had to do it again, I'd spend a little more $$$ and get a CB with a few more features (like RF gain, weather channels, etc.) For nearly the same price as the 505XL, you can get this Midland 1001LWX and it has just about everything you would need.

Midland 1001LWX 40 Channel Mobile CB with ANL, RF Gain, PA, and Weather Scan https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00176RNLA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_uDBvzbV0P5EPM

But, most importantly, get yourself a quality antenna!!! That's where the performance is! Check out @dirty deeds build thread; he posted a mount, spring, antenna, and cable bundle that's hard to beat for the price!

Thank you for the info, I'm going to check out that midland! Do you have any pics of your install placement for everything, so I can get ideas?

That's what I'm thinking as well. The antenna plugs directly into the CB, so there is no ground wire. But my new Midland plugs into the cig lighter, whereas my Uniden was wired straight to the battery.

I actually don't (fail #3 today). Check out this thread, though!

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/cb-specifics.434871/

My Uniden was mounted to the right side of the driver's footwell. My Midland, though, lives either in the center console or the glove box when not in use. The wiring is run through the the little cubby-shelf below the ignition. Give me a few minutes, and I'll get pics up here for you.

I had a Uniden PRO510XL that was peaked and tuned, that was a great radio and I could easily get 5 miles or more on it. For the money that little thing is a beast when someone who knows how to tune it gets a hold of it. It can put out more than 4 watts, believe me.

Oh, I don't doubt That! Unidens are solid platforms. But I'm saying for just a little more, I could have gotten a few more features like weather stations, RF gain, etc. The 505XL was definitely a good radio, but with my crappy antenna, the system as a whole was "ok" at best. Definitely had LOTS of room for improvement.

I had no idea the cb's were like $30-40! I was expecting $120? Maybe
