You may have noticed alot of pics here on tw no longer display but have a link directing you to the photobucket site.

    bwe.jpg

As the title says, after 14 years of doing so, photo storage site photobucket no longer allows 3rd party hosting for free accounts. The minimum one would have to pay is 400$/yr. This follows historical patterns of sites like geocities, angelfish and tripod.

When they go to a pay model customers flee and the site fails.

For some this is just an inconvenience. But if you linked hundreds of photos over the years in say a build thread, or a blog, one might be considering paying this ransom. Ugh.

Clearly there are better options, let discuss.

I only used photobucket for my sig pic and I forget why, I think at the time I didn't want to link to my cloud storage where all my photos are. I did look in the 1st gen build section briefly and found several dating back years that have built their whole thread around photobucket and will need to move and re-link all the pics.

... until they also charge extra to host your pics after you get sucked in. Remember that Yahoo just got bought out by AT&T, so who knows what additional charges/changes are coming.

I hate Photobucket. Ever tried to download/save a page that you wanted to keep offline that had Photobucket pics?

Just use TW attachments/gallery. Easier, and your pics will stay without any costs.

I have a Smugmug site that I have paid for for years but I make some money off a few photo jobs a year, so it's worth paying. They send me a 1099 to file and everything. But even if I weren't moonlighting as a photog I would pay them to host. It's worth it.

I've been meaning to dump my photos off Photobucket but it's so slow on my PC that I've been putting it off. So many ad crashes. I will this weekend though.

Hahaha ok. Well you plan for that and let me know when it happens. Until then I'll keep hosting my images in actual quality there, for free.

I plan on using a website hosting company and ftp'ing my pics. Pain in the ass but future proofs me from another free service.
