A quick way to find out is to knock on it from inside the truck. You'll hear the "sand" rattling around up there. If anything you might try tapping them towards the front of the truck and removing the a-pillar to get most of them out.
One of the installs we did has this problem. The only way we found out about it was we dropped the headliner later to sound deaden the roof and saw all the tiny orange stains on the backside of the headliner. The owner had reported seeing small water spots on rainy days, but it was minor enough where he wasn't concerned about it and we didn't even think about rust.
IMO, adding silicone to the backside of the bolts wont help anything if you're already sealed up although it certainly won't hurt either. It'll be more of a mental thing than anything else really.

I did sound deaden my roof when I had the headliner out for the install. I will try tapping them to the front. Thanks for these awesome tips!

Did you guys notice a significant increase in cabin noise after the install? Wondering if the sound deadening would be worth it

Wind noise is subjective. I noticed a "noise"- not enough to be annoying but enough to know something was in the roof. I would actually say the Tacoma kazoo is more annoying that anything the prinsu adds. So no, I wouldn't say it was significant.
I'll also add that for the install we did use the weather stripping that @zscott provides so that helped. I've hear some members sometimes get their racks and the weather stripping is missing, and they don't get enough noise to where the feel they need it.

I'm new to the forum so excuse my ignorance please. Is anybody else wondering why Toyota hasn't offered factory mounting on Access cabs? I love these racks and plan to move forward accordingly but I seriously considered purchasing the crew cab for factory mounting option for cab rack

    Gentleman,

after the recent heavy rainfalls my whole headliner was soaked. Dropped the headliner and found that some of the riv nuts and the rear window is leaking.

It seems to come from the area where the two sheet metals are pressed together. To sealing the bottom won't help. I sealed the top with black silicone but it still come running through the riv nut. Due to the shape if the riv not thread sealer won't work wither, it is getting in the roof before the thread starts.

Any idea how to seal that before i put the headliner back in?

I'll try to add pictures later on.

The way we did it was to add copious amounts of silicone while installing the rivnut. We let that dry somewhat before adding installing the rack. Then we added more silicone under the aluminum spacer when installing the rack. This makes the bottom of the spacer the sealing point for the newly drilled holes. You can see in the first post where we showed the installed rivnuts and there was silicone underneath and in a later picture you can see the dried silicone pushing out from beneath the spacer as well. I hope this helps. Some people have reported no leaks at all and some have had to do it a second time. It is unfortunate that your did not seal correctly the first time. Best advice I can give you is something similar to installing a toilet wax ring. Once you set the spacer in place with the silicone, do not move it or you will most likely disturb the seal and have to start over. Here's where a second set of hands will be extremely useful. Another suggestion would be to set the spacers and silicone and let it dry for 24 hours before placing the rack on top. Good luck.

Can I buy the Astro 1427? It's like $30 cheaper than the 1442 and I don't really see what the difference is. According to an Amazon review they just come with different mandrels. What size do I need for the install?

According to UPS my rack will be here Friday! :bananadance:

I don't remember the exact size, but yes any rivet installer will work (given the correct bit). We actually lost the Astro 1442 recently :frusty: and I was given a super old version of this (circa 1980s):
    https://www.amazon.com/Surebonder-8...id=1506373019&sr=8-4&keywords=rivnut+tool+kit

Actually works the same, for a much better price IMO. Grip is the same and the finished product is just as clean.

No, I insulated the roof and all 4 doors at the same time. But I can hear the raspiness of my exhaust now that I've rerouted the Y-pipe. Need to insulate the floors next

Hey guys, primed my rack over the weekend and was looking over the hardware. Am I supposed to have 12 of those silver spacers (so drill 12 holes)? the rack seems to have slots for 12 mounting bolts but I only have 11 of the spacers.

    Thanks

Yes, you're supposed to have one spacer for each mounting hole. If you're in a rush to mount your new rack, feel free to proceed as normal (drill rivnut, silicone). It's pretty easy to add the spacer afterwards (just slides right in). Just keep in mind that you'll have an open hole to the elements in the mean time so rain, dirt, critters can get in.
I'd contact your original seller (Zach or CBI) and see about getting new hardware. FWIW, Lowes does sell the spacers (or at least similar ones) in those bins in the hardware isle if you can't get a response from the vendor or can't wait for whatever reason.

After seeing this I think I may take the plunge on a Prinsu on my 2015 AC, B/C I have a Utility Package truck and I have no AC door side air bags...

My install might just have less "Pucker Factor" involved...

Any 3rd Gen installs? Wondering if the airbags are still an issue.

I would imagine the air bag situation in the 3rd is the same or worse.
My advise is to remove the headliner before drilling. Never drill blind.

Thanks, will do if I ever install. But are the sideplates all longer now to clear the rear airbags like the one Prinsu made for you? Did you ever get yours installed? Went through entire thread and don't remember if you have.

The sides are supposed to be the longer ones now.
I sold my Prinsu. I bought a Front Runner rack for my cap. Liked it so much I bought the Front Runner rack and the Access Cab side Rails from Pelfrey Bilt. Did that so my racks would match. I am going to mount the Pelfrey rails just like the Prinsu. Not gonna follow the Pelfrey instructions.
Got to warm up some first. We had about a foot of snow this week. Then hopefully I can get it done.
