Throttle body does not close completely

Hey guys and gals. Just cleaned the MAF and throttle body on my '06 4.0L.
I noticed that the throttle body does not close 100%.
Is this normal?

 

So, if nothing broke inside the Throttle body, it's just a matter of allowing the computer to readjust the stepper motor to a new baseline.

You will need to unhook your battery in your truck and let all the computer learned settings reset. Then, reinstall your TB and the next start cycle the vehicle will check itself and reset the idle position. When there is a significant amount of buildup in the TB, the set idle position will be set relative to the edge of the buildup, not the housing. So after a clean, it will have an excessive gap and sometimes keep the vehicle from starting.

One thing to remember with these new throttle bodies that are solely throttle by wire, is that they need to be held open by the stepper motor. Forcing it open can potentially lead to broken teeth in the gears used by the stepper motor to open the throttle plate.

 

Yes that is normal. This is why you clean it, so it doesn't get completely clogged.

If it closed completely, how would your engine breath?

 

The stepper motor is constantly adjusting the plate to achieve what you are asking of the engine, including idle speed. Long gone are the days of Idle air control valves or the idle screw.

 

100% normal. It needs to let in some air at all times to keep the engine running, such as at idle or coasting.
