Great minds think alike. It irritates the shit out of me when somebody gives somebody bad advise about air conditioning. It's something that should not be messed with by the average joe.

Yup! But knowing the leak before hand can save you bucks if they claim you need your system replaced.

    Thanks for the info!

Yeah.. as an insurance adjuster, I know this is how we checked for damage to the A/C system in the old days.... There is an unverified story of an adjuster that did this in a shop and the shop turned him in. Mostly we are dealing with fairly obvious stuff like a damaged condenser.

Yikes. I'm a little out of warranty so that's not happening. Hopefully just a small leak. After further inspection, compressor seems to be working fine except for quick cycling. My hope is just a small leak, maybe one of the lines.

I have A/C gauges and vacuum pump if needed. You can buy freon with dye to refill and check for leaks with a black light.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind. I've got a really good mech here in WF for all the stuff I don't want to do myself, which this might fall under. The hotter it gets, the less I want work on my truck.

Update. Must have just been a shade low. Added a small amount of freon, low side pressure is good. Cooling about as good as it ever has.

Thanks for the info so far. If acts up again, I'll have a good basis for diag.

You've probably got a slow leak somewhere.

If it were my truck I would discharge/recover (whatever PC term we're using here) change out both high and low side schrader valves, and vacuum it down.

Once you've pulled a vacuum on it for an hour or so let it sit with the manifold gauge on and see if it holds a vacuum.

If it does hold a vacuum recharge the system with the correct amount and go from there.

I bought a manifold gauge, vacuum pump combo on Amazon several years ago and have used it a bunch of times on not only my vehicles but friends who have had AC problems.
