My 2005 Tacoma with 328k original miles burns too much oil. Approx 2 quarts between oil changes. Where should I start looking if I want to replace the engine? Ebay?

What's your budget? A reman long block is about 2-5k depending on who you go to. Craigslist usually has junkyard trucks you can pick the motor out of.

Start calling around to jasper, napa, autozone, places like that and see what a long block costs. Most of the engines on ebay will be junkyard engines. Jasper has a 3 year unlimited mile warranty.

If all it does is burn 2 qts oil, what's an extra $10 between oil changes? A lot less expensive than replacing an engine.

True. My plan is to keep it until it gets worse. Just doing due diligence

I've been wanting to buy another long block for my truck and build it up with a supercharger and possibly bore it over and drop it right into my truck. That's years down the road if ever. But out of all the companies that have remanned long blocks I like jasper the best. Good customer service and they stand behind their warranties and don't dick you around if an issue arises. Advanced auto parts on the other hand is run by nitwits. I got a long block for a Honda Odyssey from them. When I opened the crate the oil pressure sender was cracked off and another one was weeks away. Had to buy a new oil pump assembly from Honda and install that. Big pain in the ass. After I got it all buttoned up I started it and it was making all kinds of valve racket and an immediate check engine light for a knock detected (no shit) and misfires on #1 and #5. Turned out to be 2 bad valves. Pulled the head and they looked cooked. So much for a reman long block.

I had my 2tr rebuild by a local guy for $2250. I thing a remanufatured long block from spartan runs around $1000 more then that. Although I save a bit of money I waited 6 months to have mine running again and it still never was quite right. I guess bringing a work truck 4 cyl to a guy that builds chevy v8 race engines during racing season was the cause of both the time issue and the valve tick issue but you could probably have it rebuilt for a similar price to what I paid and have better results
