there might already be a thread but I didn't see one. But i have a 2002 Tacoma trd. It still has a casette player and I want a new radio. I've found many but want to know the best one and not something just cheap to get by but not to expensive and not terribly hard to install.

My 2001 has the same radio/cassette. I will be installing this one (link to ebay below) as soon as I get my new sliders installed! Promised myself I'd do only 1 upgrade at a time! I have purchased from this eBay seller before without problems too.

Best and not expensive don't live in the same universe.

But really any cheap stereo from Walmart will do the job. There's not a lot of difference between them until you start doing real system. Get one with bluetooth, get either a single or double din depending on your factory stereo size, get the wiring harness for your truck, and you'll be done in an hour.

When I was younger pioneer was a name to chase, Sony was a name to avoid. Now either will work for $100.

Looks like a solid choice if you don't care about CD's. I recently installed Pioneer of the same size and it's pretty easy. Like others have posted, it will bolt right in. I'd suggest purchasing a wire adapter and some crimp on butt connectors. Here is a link to the wire adapter. https://www.amazon.com/Metra-70-176...99424819&sr=8-14&keywords=Pioneer+MVH-AV290BT IF you purchase from Crutchfield, then it will be included of course. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I honestly can't remember the last time I played a cd. I don't think I even own one. I stream over bt all the time and only use the disc slot to play movies.

What does this mean? I have the stock radio as well for my 99 but without the CD player (only cassette) - does that mean I have a single din?

It relates to size of the unit.

basically if it is the size of a head unit you could buy at walmart or best buy (2" tall or so) then it is a single din.

If it is the mega size 4" or so tall unit, then it is double din.

Most likely yes. I have the radio without the pocket below factor style as crutchfield puts it. Single din are the more thin radios but if you have a double din radio you can put a single din in and add a case if you will around it to fill the gaps. But if yours is only a cassette player then most likely it is a single din. If your radio unit is small

I don't play CD's a lot but I like to be able to. Sound quality from a CD is hard to beat too, but it will spoil you.
    Good deal.

Alpine or pioneer is pretty much the leaders. If I would replace mine it would be alpine.

The reason that I chose the Pioneer AVIC5200NEX was it was the least expensive that also had CD/DVD player and GPS Navigation along with all of the other bells & whistles.
