Best synthetic engine lube

I've changed my regular oil in my 1995 Tacoma every 10k miles and the engine is pristine at 215k. I just got an 07 Access Cab 4x4 w/47k. Why should I spend an extra $20 per oil change for synthetics? Is there any data to support the claims?

 

i,ve always used the dino,castrol 5w30.i put bg moa in with every oil change,cause i get it at work cheap.i have seen engines with 300k clean as new with dino oil.

This will probably instigate some flames, but...

I use dino engine oil but I change way more often than 10k (assuming miles). My belief is that the biggest benefit to changing engine oil is to get the particulates and corrosive chemicals (acids caused by combustion) out. no need to waste money on synthetics or prolong the buildup by trying for long change intervals.


On gear boxes and hydraulics, a whole different story, however. As long as they aren't contaminated, you can get a lot longer life out of a synthetic as they will take the heat and shearing more gracefully.

 

Hmmm....30k....yes, I think I see what you mean and why not in fact. And I agree with Taco John generally...although I don't change so often. Hydro and gear comment makes a whole lotta sense.

Castrol is what I have always used as the guys over at Lexus (TOYOTA) say it is what a Toyota is meant to have in it, weather it be Synt or reg. its always done me right. My last TACO had 324K and when I did a valve cover gasket on it before I sold it the Mech. thought I was lying to him about never having the engine cracked because it was so clean and I do 5k changes and have for years. I've said this before. The only reason I use synthetic in my truck is because it sits outside in the winter. Synthetic flows much better at very cold temperatures, especially at start up, where most engine wear occurs. My two cars that sit in the warm garage at night, get quality dino oil. You can always compromise and use a synthetic blend. I'm actually trying Motorcraft synthetic blend 5w20 in my daughter's Mazda right now. A 5 quart jug of it is like 12 bucks at Walmart. Whatever you do, use quality oil filters. JMO.

 

I'm gona give you my 2 cents. The reality is I don't know much about anything. But, I use mobil1 in the engine and Lucas oils for the gears and nothing's exploded . I also add seafoam to the crank case twice a year. I add it about 100miles before I have to change the oil.

Finally, if you've never seen seafoam run through an intake, you should try it out of morbid curiosity. It's pretty simple (i.e. their website) and effective.
