Thinking of getting an RV and selling the Taco or trading it towards the RV. It has about 7,500 miles and sits in the garage. So might as well
get rid of it. My Sierra has about 47,000 and I have had it about 6 months less. So looks like I rather drive it.

Design has been on the 4Runners since 2010. I never really had an issue as long as you drain the filter housing before removing it. Even without draining the housing I don't think I ever had that big of an issue with it. Gloves and paper towels work pretty well.

I've been doing cartridge filter changes on Toyota engines for 12+ years. They aren't bad to do....nor are they that messy once you've done a few.

Frankly...removing the filter from my 2.7 was much more difficult and messier than any cartridge filter I've removed

The 2GR has been in production for 14 model years in some form or another. It's always had a cartridge filter. This is nothing new. It's only new to you G3 guys who have not owned any other later model Toyota/Scion/Lexus.

Nearly all Toyota engines have a cartridge filter....and have for years.

I've changed a couple of vehicles with the cartridge style filters. Still haven't made a mess with any of the vehicles I worked on.

This should have been 2 minutes instead of 20 but you should probably show everybody at jiffy lube

EXACTLY! This handy tool drains the filter housing mess-free - remove the plug, install the tool, thread the thumbwheel in open the valve and drain the oil out the tube. I bought one after the first oil change on my Tundra, that stupid plastic drain tool that comes with the filter is a joke.

Spin-on filters are going the way of the dodo bird because a cartridge filter element is cheaper to manufacture, and most importantly, far easier to recycle.

And yes there is a way - but I know how you feel. My first experience with this cartridge system had me searching for a better way, I've changed thousands of litres of oil, and I made the biggest mess in recent history with the plastic drain tube gimmick.
