Why are RTT's so expensive?

Wut? 'Winer' is the best time to camp.. in MONTANA..

I go places a Tacoma can only dream of going to, and most 'pansies' are afraid to hike to.

And when you think your RTT is truly the 'top tier' of outdoor camping.. (this one is gonna kill 'ya). For the amount of $$ you spend on an RTT you might as well go the full monty brother.. Unlatch 4 corners, open door, hit the electric 'up' button.. DONE. ;)

I had that rig for 5 years and spent over 300 nights in it. F*ck an RTT, lol.

Been there, done that. The issue for me wasn't climbing down the ladder. It was trying to find my shoes. I was still sober enough to not want mud in the tent so I took them off, tied the laces together and hung them on a hook under the tent. Apparently they came untied and fell on the ground. It's like 3am, I'm still half drunk. Hanging onto the ladder with one hand and groping around while needing to piss badly. I finally gave up and braved the rocks barefoot. Maybe I'll get one of those bottles others have mentioned.

Easy in the truck camper. Open door, piss, close door and crawl back in bed. Oh and maybe crack another cold one from the fridge, lol.

What you do is wait for some sap to buy it new, get tired of it, then buy it. That Hallmark Guannella camper was over $30,000 new. I bought a 5 year old model (with the carbon roof and solar) for $14,000 and I sold it for $15,000 after 5 years, lol.

Seriously- I paid $18,000 for my old '98 Dodge 2500 diesel 5spd back in 2005. I put both the truck and Guannella camper for sale on Wander the West for $26,000 last year.

$15,000 for the camper, $11,000 for the truck (over 230,000 miles). Sold it for asking price in 6 hours to a hippie in CA.

True story. Best $$ spent ever, lol.

Well...I'm in the Army. Talk about learning how to make the best of very minimal gear in the worst possible conditions, like with people shooting at you LOL, ...and not showering for weeks and longer at a time.

So you you can imagine how some of us in the military feel when you guys talk about all this fancy comforts to go camping at a State park:rofl:

hahaha! Well, there you go. You know...to the owner of that thing...please just stay at a hotel!

    Excellent points!

That's what I am talking about. When it comes to going to remote locations - whether on a combat zone or primitive areas like the ones you showed - there's no RTT that can do any magic.

The ultimate experience is with whatever you can carry on your back in the midst of the wilderness. For everything else let's stay at a hotel

I leave mine on because I'm retired and can pretty much go camping anytime the mood hits me. Which is a lot. I may go tomorrow or I may not. If I do I'm ready. It is actually a badge of honor as well. I've got the only one I've ever seen in my part of the country. I wouldn't have known they existed without this forum. I get strangers coming up to me all the time asking about it and we end up having some nice conversations. And...I like how my truck looks with it.

No shit. I used my truck camper as base camp. From there I would snowshoe in with buddies to hunt for a few days with a 4 season backpacking tent.

God damn pansies thinking an RTT is 'gold'. What a pant load from a bunch of state park 'glampers', lol.

Oh and my my buddies tent is the best... Base camp before packing in for an elk hunt.

And then smacked with a blizzard at -10 for 2 days straight.

Yeah- RTT's are the shit, lol.

    Go Army baby!

I hear you man I too am a big advocate of buying used... that is why I have the rtt, I found a killer deal on a used one.

I do not use it much, just another piece of gear in the gear shed...

either sportmobile van or 4wheelcamper are in my future, for now I am still young and foolish lol

everyone here bitching about what gear is best and why and what is needed and what is not should go spend a day at an over land expo lol...

why do you need that? why not...

why did you do that? just because...

    Hell yea!

Pics speak a thousand words. I think you are really covering the main point of the counter-argument to RTTs. When you get into that stuff you guys were doing in those pics, man, that's just the ultimate adventure. There's really no room for comforts and whatnot. You take what you need to survive and make the best of the circumstance. People often don't realize the amazing freedom this provides. Just man and nature as it is meant to be!

Just when you thought this thread couldn't get any more into the ditch.... it goes full retard.

"I'm in he Army and that makes me a super badass... somehow... I know what it's really like, in the shit, and anyone in the military feels the same way I do."

"Expensive RTTs are for pansies, here's my camper that cost more, is bigger and heavier, and can go less places than a smaller truck with a RTT... but that doesn't matter because it's my base camp. Because you know, if you have a RTT you don't know what backpacking is."

Either you two are trolling or just idiots.

What's wrong giving kudo's to an Army pal? I'm 50 and 25 years away from my DD214.

Actually the definition of an idiot is limiting yourself to sleeping where your truck will go. Wilderness adventures are far, far away from roads buddy boy. Hate to burst your bubble, but tis true. RTT's are nothing short of truck camper. Albeit a very, very spartan one and very expensive for what they are. You can get a canvas wall tent for the price paid for a RTT.

My truck is a vehicle to get me to places I need to put in..

You can't take a truck to the places I go. And a tent is much more portable. And cheaper. And I don't 'fidget' about creepy crawlies around my tent, lol.

Here's more 'retard'. You can have your RTT and stay at the bottom of the road. See that dot down there on the road? That's my old Taco.

You can't get to here by truck.

RTT's are simply car camping tents. Very expensive ones. I don't understand why any one would pay that kind of coin to sleep. It's actually very stupid IMHO.

On what fantasy island are you going to serve on Active Duty in until you are 75yrs old!?!?!

I just don't know what to say to all of this.

Do you honestly believe that owning a RTT precludes one from camping in places that require movement away from ones conveyance? If this is true, which your posts lead one to believe, you are either arrogant beyond words, or ignorant beyond the same.

We all understand that you live in Montana, and that somehow makes you more of a man than us mere non-Montanians. Especially those from lesser places like California, since you know, lesser men come from outside of the one from which you hail; as you seemingly go out of your way to get in some childish jabs on their account.

Nobody said that you can take a truck where you can go on foot, you are assuming that. What was alluded to in past postings is; you are contradictory in your statements that a RTT is worthless based on cost and use, yet you spent 8x that amount on your camper to do the same thing, albeit with more luxury.

So in a sense those with a RTT are more of a man than even you.... because spartan existence proves masculinity, duh.

But, nobody was attacking you, they are merely laughing at your arrogance and/or ignorance in believing you are some sort of special butterfly. In your mentality I would be more of a real man than you because I paddle and portage to my trail-head, not take a silly powerboat.

Then again, I am not calling into question your masculinity, because frankily I have zero effs to give about you, and others with your mindset. I also don't feel the need to beat my "I was in the Army" drum every chance I get, as though it gives me some level of street cred. And, just to play down your apearant narcissism, that Army comment was directed towards 199RegCab, not your simple recognition and, esprit de corps, which was not objectionable in the least.

Please take a deep cleansing breath, and enjoy the outdoors how *you* see fit, and don't be so damn judgmental on how others do the same.
