    This!

Except the every two years part. A buddy of mine robbed an (original) non greasable U-joint off an old junked van and put them in his early Bronco. It lasted years and he went through at least a couple of greasable axle joints during that time.

Must have been a mistake. Take it back to the dealer and ask them to install your zerks.

The only reason I say every 2 years(could say 3, or whatever) is for the OP who is so concerned about his u-joints failing. Change em out every couple years for new, the cost will be under $100 for the whole truck, and they wont be ridiculously stuck in the yokes. Every 2 years would be ~20-25k miles for most people...

Or press em out yearly, clean and grease the caps/needle bearings, toss em back in.

Again, I would rather have non-greasable joints as they are stronger, even if they require more frequent replacement for "peace of mine".

Actually there is probably a greater "danger" of having serviceable u-joints that never get serviced...see ignorant owners and service techs.

The First production run on the 2016 Tacoma's last half of 2015, all the 4X4 trucks then had grease Zerks. I have a 2016 bought in Oct 2015 and it has all the grease Zerks.

Only the 2 up front in my Baja 8/16 build, but I can definitely tell you that purging them every 1500-2000k miles of heavy driving I do keeps the clunking at bay...

The way I see it, having grease fittings for u-joints doesn't guarantee proper lubrication. The only sure way is to disassemble and grease. When using a fitting to lubricate, the grease will follow the path of least resistance. There are 4 bearing areas that needs lubrication. The only way to possibly know that these 4 bearings have been lubricated is to continue pumping grease into the fitting until grease starts coming out of the seals for all 4 bearings. Even this might not be a certainty. Once you weaken, break or damage the seal, the grease can no longer stay in the u-joint or contaminants can enter the bearing area. Now, you will get into the debate on... are grease fittings necessary for suspension components?

I know it's an entirely different truck...

But, my 2001 Dodge 2500 4x4 Cummins diesel truck also had non-greasable u-joints in all the drive shafts. I didn't have any one of the u-joints go out until between 90K - 100K miles. I noticed it when the rear drive shaft started making a very noticeable clunk when I let the clutch out when starting out from a stopped position, and it would make a loud clunk-clunk-clunk... for the first several seconds of rolling until I got up a little speed. Nothing fell off on the ground, and it was only that one u-joint that was damaged (I had ALL the u-joints replaced when I took it in to my mechanic).

for the end user this is kinda the point with a non-zerk setup, right? for 'yota the point is to save a few bucks. but there's no big problem. and you can upgrade the shit outta your hardware however you like.

For the end user that understands such things, yes. ME, I choose non greasable whenever I can, but I dont go in water or mud if I can avoid it, if I did I might choose greasable so I could flush them, and just understand they were slightly weaker.

For Toyota, the price difference is negligible if anything, HOWEVER every manufacturer is going to non-servicable/lifetime this and that because 98% of people are lazy and dont perform regular maintenance. Like BMW claims lifetime transmission fill, ZF states 100k miles, most BMW guys go 50k max...

Been there done that. No pogo or pole vault. Drive shaft came off at the tcase while I was doing 65ish in my old 83 pu. I just pulled over to the shoulder, grabbed my wrench and took the drive shaft the rest of the way, locked the hubs and continued on my way in fwd. Only Carnage that did happen was the driveshaft punched a hole through the floor board.

Many manufacturers (aftermarket) are dropping greaseable (zerk) ujoints completely. Last couple of times I replaced u-joints it was tough to find greaseable ones.

I don't know why everyone is making such a big deal about this. If it bothers you that much change them out for greaseable ones. If you don't know how then get your wife to do it.
