I've recently made the move from New Hampshire to Utah. And so far my wife me I are loving it. I was wondering if there is anything I should know about driving out here in general. More specifically driving through the mountains in the winter. I have no issue driving in the snow normally, but I here a lot of talk about tire chains. I normally drive on all terrain tires year round (Goodyear wrangler all-terrain adventure tires)with little issue. I am a big skier so I'll be in the mountains a lot, should I invest in a set of tire chains or winter tires? Or will I be good in all terrain tires?

A good set of chains is a wise investment.

Ask your neighbors. Some states have chain requirements for certain areas, ie passes. Ask about places you are considering visiting.

Hello, welcome to Utah. Tire chains are good to have, but will rarely get used. Been here all my life and maybe used 2-3 times on my trucks. Use quite a bit for my semi. A digging shovel will get used more than chains. Enjoy the mnts. a lot of good trails around here for all types of recreation.

To go up the cotton wood canyons you're technically supposed to have chains or snow tires "when the lights are flashing" during storms. I've never had a trouble with 4x4 and good AT tires - granted I haven't been up on terrible days.

I can from NJ and the snow here is much easier to drive in in that it's pure snow - not layers of snow and ice like we get back east.

Another general tip about Utah drivers that you'll pick up on quickly is that red lights are more of a guideline than a law. So I make it a habit to look before taking off at a green light to watch for any non-Tacoma drivers trying to beat the light :D
