Buy a cheap one or something that looks like it. Fix it to the bracket real good. Cover the outside with never cease. If the cops can just show up and lift a print clear as day, takes 2 seconds to run them through a computer. Also, if you can get Wi-Fi in range of your place, I'd look into a security cam. We use a "Canary" at our house and the night vision on it is pretty fantastic. You can set it to alert you in the moment or just record in times of movement. All saves to your inet account for 12hrs or so, and downloadable

Depends on the department but a lot of large PD and SO do not investigate petty theft.

Sorry man. Looks like kids to me. I would keep your eyes open for a small gaggle of boys that always roll around the complex together. Maybe go knock on the doors of the apartments closest to where the truck was parked on the off chance that they saw something. I've had similar stuff at my house over the years. Police will pull prints, but usually juveniles aren't in the system. Cameras aren't a bad idea. Get them on film and post it up to your neighborhood website, post on the bulletin board at the apartment. On the off chance that they have good parents that see your fliers/ pictures/ video, you may indeed get retribution.

Who else in your complex has a "rig" that could gain from having your lights? Also, maybe check nearby pawn shops?

My sons bike was stolen from our yard last year. He had just put the bike up against the side of the house to come in and get a drink, and intended to put the bike away a bit later. Some punk ass kid visiting his friend saw the bike and took off with it. My neighbor was outside and got a good description of the kid. We called the cops, provided a receipt of the bike when we purchased it because it was only a month old at that point. The neighbor gave their statement along with the detailed description and the cops said, well, that is all we need.
I asked if they are going to ride around the neighborhood and look for the bike or kid, he said ¨No sir, we just file a report and that´s all we can do.¨
A week later, I was driving home from work and in front of some apartment buildings I saw his bike and the kid. I made a quick u-turn and entered the parking lot. The kid took off running, leaving the bike on the ground. I called the police and said close the report, I have retrieved my bike. I told them where I found it and which direction the kid ran. Still nothing was done even though we knew where the kid lived, all they had to do was confront the parents.

Sorry OP, for what happened to you. It looks like a camera is in your near future, not to provide video to the cops, but so you know who is doing this.

This may sound bad, but hey, glass half full right? If it was a group of kids or one kid I want to give them credit for not damaging your truck (I did not see any damage other than the stolen led in your picture). They easily could have fubard'd the hood, cowling, windshield, etc. I've had stuff stolen from vehicles and replacing the item was much easier than the body work required to get the vehicle back to the way it was.

    Still a (bunch of) punk(s).

That's the down side with ditch lights... there is just no way to secure them. Even if you weld the pods to the mounting bracket they can just cut the wire to get at you... just shitty cause I don't even know if I would replace it as its probably going to keep happening. If you do get a new one I would just remove them and put them on for trips only. Sucks to hear, sorry OP

It's really hard to own anything nice, and keep it that way, when you rent an apartment. Same boat here.

Some kid shot my headlight out with a BB gun so I dragged his little ass over to his father, BB gun in one hand and him in the other.

I actually felt bad for the little prick when I saw what his dad did to him. His dad roughed him up pretty badly, especially for a kid (right on the scene!). His dad paid me for the light.

It's a misdemeanor unless it's over $1000 here. SDPD won't come out, tells you to file an on-line report. Shoplifting is rampant since they know that nothing gets done about it. I think it is two days of community service for the first 10 convictions, like they are going to court....

Within 3 miles of my home there has been 153 cars stolen or broken into so far this year.

Sorry to hear it OP. Major bummer.

Hope you find who took them. Or at least find the lights...

Buddy of mine found his stolen bike on craigslist. Call the cops and went with them to meet the guy for the sale.

I'd talk to the property manager and connect with my neighbors to let them know vandalism is happening. Can be done by talking or writing a one pager and leaving it on their door step, car, or mailbox. At least you get community awareness and neighbors watching for shinanigans. Who knows, they may talk to their family and maybe the person doing it will hear there is an effort in play to detour this type of bs.

Could still cut the wire, in his situation there isn't much he can do if they want to tamper with his stuff

Step 1: Place a dud. A cheap, china light.
Step 2: Waste a night and get into position.
    Step 3: Target practice.

Step 4: Go to prison for murder.
