Tonneau cover question

Looking to get a tonneau cover and liking the Bakflip models. But these apparently rely on the tailgate lock for security. I have a Dynolock electric setup that has worked great for 6 years but has failed on me once where the actuator came loose and jammed the lock. That time I had to remove the inner tailgate plastic cover to repair it. It seems that if this happened with a Bakflip I'd be SOL and have to cut the tonneau cover off to get at the back of the tailgate to repair the electric lock.

Can anyone with a Bakflip chime in... is there any way to open it non-destructively if the tailgate gets jammed? Otherwise I may go with one of the Undercover one piece flip up tonneaus that have their own separate lock.

 

I have a Bakflip and I really like it. After owning this, I would never own a 1 piece tonneau. I have the popnlock and I have had the same thoughts as you. I am 98% certain that you can make a hook, slip it under the rubber seal and hook the cable to unlatch the tonneau. However, any lowlife theif that has seen a Bakflip, probably realizes this too.

 

This is really a dilemma. I suppose we could replace the electric locks with a Pop and Lock manual keyed lock to be safer. But also not liking the idea that a thief could possibly open the Bakflip. Whichever cover I go with I will connect up a pin or tilt switch to my alarm system.

 

Yeah, it's impossible to predict what the tweaker/thief is gonna do. Are they gonna open the tonneau the "professional" way, by hooking the cable or are they gonna just take a prybar and rip it open? I think the key here is don't keep thousands of dollars worth of stuff in your truck and leave it parked in Harlem.

 

I tied a piece of string to the pull line on the bakflip and ran it to a place between the rubber seal between the bakflip and bed that only I know of. This way if it my pop n lock fails I know I can pull the string and open the bakflip. I also removed the screws that are the left and right side of the inside tailgate cover while leaving the upper middle and lower middle on the tailgate cover, so I can unscrew them and reach the locking lever if needed.

 

I have a retraxx now but will be replacing it with a bakflip in the near future.
