Does anyone have any advice? Would sooner not go back and forth buying these covers trying to find one that works. Taking the pad off all the time aint really an option, im biking 3x or more a week.

Supposedly the better ones that also protect the bikes down tube are: Fox, Evoc, and Dakine.

    Thanks for the details,

what I did was tuck the tailgate handle cover up and under the pad. No issues with scratching, atleast on my race face one I had. I did however see the pad in the camera when I was backing up though.

Here is the new Yakima Gatekeeper size Medium. It fits perfectly. Seems like it was designed just for a 3rd gen Taco. Backup camera still 100%. Very high quality materials it seems, the neoprene cradles to hold your frame are great. Easy to put on.

This is perfect for the 3rd gen, I have the last model of the Yakima tailgate pad and the flip up section is way to small for it to access the handle. :annoyed:
I might have to upgrade to the new model haha

Does anybody have experience with the RaceFace tailgate cover and the view from the back up camera if the tailgate handle flap is tucked up? This is the tailgate pad I would like to get but want to know if anyone has had success tucking up the tailgate handle flap and having the rear view camera operational. I do not like how the Dakine flap straps up and will just catch wind all the time. Hoping to leave my tailgate pad on all summer long!

    Any advice would be helpful!

I've got a Raceface as well. I do tuck the flap in, but it isn't big enough to give a 100% clear view. Not bad, though. That Yak above seems to be the ticket for you.

Ok thanks for the info. I don't need a clear view, just like the camera to know distance. I like the functionality of the raceface and the shop here local has one. Ill probably buy this. Cheers!

    Looks great! Couple of questions...

    - Does your bike back tire have clearance to your (factory?) tonneau cover no problem or do you have to wedge it in there diagonally? (I have a Large 29er and 27.5)

    - Can you close the (factory?) tonneau so that it "clicks" (e.g. locks) into place over the pad?

    - Do you have a pic (similar angle) of a bike in there?

    Thanks!!!

Yes it is the factory tonneau cover and yes my Santa Cruz Hightower size L (29er) has clearance for the back tire no problem.

Yes you can close the tonneau cover to make it click locked over the pad but just barely, you have to really push on it but it works. Did it the other day camping to lock up all the food and stuff to keep the bears out, but I normally just leave it folded up, I will use the tonneau much more in the winter when my ski quiver will live back there.

I’ll try to get a pic next time I have bikes on there.

Also just thought about your question about the rear tire clearance with the factory tonneau, I have the long bed in case you couldn’t tell from the photo

I used one of the original Dakine pads on my Tundra, but it's too large for my Tacoma tailgate. I'm for sure going with the Yakima Gatekeeper after reading this thread. I missed having the backup camera with the Dakine (especially around tight/crowded trailheads). I love that the Yakima Gatekeeper has the downtube cradle integrated into the pad... Seems a lot more secure.

I was thinking of ways to prevent theft since I’ve heard of a lot of these getting plucked outta the backs of trucks.

Would there be a way to run a master lock cable through the tie downs then lock it to one of the bed hooks? I can’t tell how the pad attaches to the tailgate so I don’t know if this would even be possible.

Running a cable through the tie downs would be pointless. You can cut the tie downs with a pair of scissors... or just loosen/undue the straps. I can't really think of any decent way to lock the pad to the tailgate/truck. The pad materials are all easily cutable.

My neighbor leaves his on his truck 24/7 and hasn't had an issue. He leaves his truck parked outside overnight. I have always taken mine off and stored it in my garage after each ride.

I have a long cable that I wrap around the bikes (through the frame and through each wheel if I have enough slack), then I padlock it to the D rings or the hitch if there's enough slack. I generally lock my bikes in if I'm traveling long distances where I know I might have to make a pit-stop. I also do this for post-ride food and brews, so I don't have to worry about my bike in the parking lot.
