My Tacoma just hit 100k. I know I need to get the timing belt and water pump changed. Not sure if I should try buying some sort of "kit" and get a garage to do it or take it to the dealership? The dealership has proven to be untrustworthy in the past on maintenance on my truck. If I do buy the parts, where do I start?

You have a timing chain. No reason to change it.

Really? So what major maintenance should I do at 100k?

Just a heads up, when I had my Tacoma last year, I needed the water pump/thermostat replaced. The local dealer (Toyota of Cool Springs) quoted me over $1,300 to do it. I found a local shop that did it all for $650 including new belts and pulleys.

Spark plugs, serpentine belt (if original), and change transmission fluid.

Water pumps will usually start leaking when they're worn out, so just check the coolant occasionally, if it starts getting lower that's likely where it's going.

Thanks so much! I like going to the garage knowing what I need so as not to be taken advantage of!

From what I've been taught, a timing chain should really only be replaced if it starts making noise. Some folks on here have over 300,000mi on their trucks with original timing chains.

6inch lift sitting on bilstein coilovers. Lexus is300 studs in front to keep stock wheels, general grabber red letters, nfab front bumper.
Timing chains should last well above 300k unless you bought the v6 camaro.

Yeah I've read a few places it should pretty much be the life of the vehicle
